On June 25, 2025, SC Magdeburg has a new reason to celebrate: After the impressive Champions League victory, three of their players were awarded the coveted award EHF Excellence Award excellent. European handball fans agree that SC Magdeburg has done an outstanding job this season!
Felix Claar was named the best backfield left, while Gisli Kristjansson secured the title of best center man. Magnus Saugstrup can also boast of being the best defender of the season. A total of eight players received this special honor, including Emil Jakobsen from SG Flensburg-Handewitt and Mathias Gidsel from Füchse Berlin. These awards are not only based on achievements within the club, but also include successes with the national teams.
The EHF Excellence Awards in detail
Loud Euro handball, who added up the registered votes, every stakeholder – i.e. players, coaches, handball journalists and fans – was allowed to influence the result with their voting. Each group counted for 25% of the overall ranking. The vote took place between June 18 and 23, just in time for the results to be announced.
The event is part of a larger framework that recently brought the women's awards to the fore this year. This honor shows how strong the sport of handball is in Europe and how important it is to recognize the best talent at both club and national team level. A total of six players have been nominated for each player position and now it is time to choose the Most Valuable Player (MVP), which will be announced on June 27, 2025 in Vienna.

The hype surrounding the sport of handball continues, and the next big announcement is coming soon. The EHF Excellence Awards, first introduced in 2023, recognize outstanding players in various categories, including goalkeepers, wingers and backcourt players. It remains exciting to see who can add the title of MVP to his honor.
