SC Magdeburg is off to a strong start in preparation: Wiegert's plan for the season!
Yesterday, SC Magdeburg started preparing for the coming season with exciting momentum. Head coach Bennet Wiegert has invited the team back to the training ground after a five-week summer break, making it clear that the workload is no higher than in previous years. His approach? Refine proven methods instead of relying on experiments. Wiegert emphasizes that targeted control of the load is essential in order to send the players into the season fit and without being overwhelmed. This philosophy is particularly important because Wiegert can look forward to a full squad this year, which is a real ray of hope after the stressful Olympic year. MDR reports about the current situation in the team.
The squad brings a good dose of stability and remains almost unchanged. Only two new faces: Elvar Jonsson, a talented backcourt player, and Sebastian Barthold, a nimble left wing talent. “The stability in the squad is a clear advantage,” says Wiegert, who wants to move the team forward by further developing their usual strengths in the game. Of course, the health of the players is a top priority; After all, everyone should be prepared for the games healthy and with a lot of anticipation.
Focus on safety and health
A healthy team is the be-all and end-all for Wiegert. The coach wants the players to look back with joy after 90 percent of the training sessions and to be in top form. This approach to training is supported by the preparation time; Wiegert is extremely satisfied with the progress so far and the test games. Avoiding injuries plays an important role. Safety in sports is becoming increasingly an issue, especially in indoor handball, where special shoes with non-slip soles and other protective measures are important components.
It is therefore advisable to check the hall floor for safety during every training session and to ensure that all equipment is used correctly. This also applies, among other things, to mouth guards, elbow pads and the proper maintenance of sports facilities. SCM handball emphasizes that Wiegert and his team did not record any new injuries during the preparation, which indicates that the training was successful.
A positive feeling for the season
Wiegert, who has been head coach at SC Magdeburg since 2015 and has already celebrated great successes such as the DHB Cup and the German championship, has high expectations for the new season. This is characterized by participation in five competitions, including the LIQUI MOLY Handball Bundesliga and the EHF Champions League. Despite the increased expectations, Wiegert does not see the coming challenge as the most difficult. “The professionals in the team have the necessary motivation,” he says and is looking forward to hearing the Champions League anthem again soon in the GETEC Arena.
The start of the season is already scheduled for August 29th in Lemgo. Fans can be curious to see how Wiegert's concept will play out in the coming months. The coach also wants the headline at the end of the season to be: “Magdeburg has developed further like every year.”
