Movember 2025: Men's health in focus - this is how to prevent it!

A very special campaign is coming up in November 2025: “Movember”. The aim is to encourage men to address the issues of prevention and early detection of cancer. The numbers speak for themselves: only about one in ten men have regular cancer screening tests. Early detection of cancer can significantly improve treatment options. The most common cancer in men is prostate cancer - one in four men will be confronted with this diagnosis in the course of their life. This is shown by the updated information from HalleLife, which emphasizes how important it is for men to take responsibility for their health and take regular preventive measures.

The risk factors for prostate cancer are varied: age, hereditary predisposition, unhealthy lifestyle habits such as smoking, alcohol abuse and lack of exercise play a decisive role. But that's not all: testicular cancer also often occurs in men between the ages of 25 and 45. To prevent this, the Cancer Society is active and encourages men to take advantage of comprehensive preventive and early detection examinations. The range here ranges from skin cancer screenings for people aged 35 and over to tests to detect colon cancer for people aged 50 and over. In addition, a monthly self-examination of the testicles is recommended from the age of 15.

Movember – Creating global awareness

The idea for “Movember” came about in 1999 in a pub in Adelaide, Australia. Since then, the annual event where men grow mustaches has become a major initiative to raise awareness about men's health. The Movember Foundation, founded by Adam Garone and his colleagues, has since raised an impressive $837 million and funded over 1,200 health projects in more than 20 countries. The three main areas the foundation focuses on are prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health.

When we look at the numbers, it becomes clear that there is a need for action. Just 12 percent of the male Austrian population received a preventive examination in 2022. In comparison, the figure for women was 13.6 percent. According to Bernhard Wurzer from the Austrian Health Insurance Fund, it is crucial to act early and identify health risks in order to avoid long-term damage to health.

Men's Health Initiatives

In order to raise men's awareness of their health, the Cancer Society offers a variety of lectures and health impulses, which are also held in companies. These campaigns not only highlight the importance of cancer prevention, but also promote an open dialogue about men's health and prevention.

The “Movember” initiative is more than just a trend. It offers an excellent opportunity for men everywhere to actively discuss their health and get excited about preventative care. Stay healthy and join in – in November the world will be a little more bearded, but above all more conscious!
