Saxony-Anhalt pays out 297,000 euros to attack victims – help is coming!
There is news in Saxony-Anhalt that is particularly important for those affected by attacks and attacks. An impressive 297,000 euros were paid out to people in need from the state's victim assistance fund. The majority of the payments will go to those injured in the devastating attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg, which took place on December 20, 2024, in which tragically six people lost their lives and over 300 others were injured. This is reported by the Borken newspaper.
As the current figures show, corresponding payments were made in a total of 159 individual procedures. What is particularly interesting is that the fund was launched retroactively to 2019, which means that those affected by the attack in Halle, which took place on October 9, 2019, can also benefit from this help. There were six payouts related to the Halle attack. Despite the challenges, 170 cases have already been completed by mid-August, while there are still 134 open cases.
Assistance for those affected
But what exactly is being done to help the victims? Another focus is on the new regulations that are currently being introduced. According to a cabinet decision, it should also be possible for those who have already received help from federal funds to receive additional money from the victim assistance fund. This regulation will apply retroactively from October 1, 2019. According to the Central German newspaper This means that not only the victims of the Magdeburg attack, but also those from Halle and a knife attack in Wolmirstedt should be supported.
Justice Minister Franziska Weidinger (CDU) emphasizes the country's responsibility to show solidarity with the victims. Anyone who would like to apply for support can do so without any statute of limitations - a real plus point for those affected. The application forms are also available online, and a one-off payment of up to 5,000 euros is available to help those affected in their time of need.
Professional support
Another important aspect is the cooperation with the Association of advice centers for those affected by right-wing, racist and anti-Semitic violence (VBRG). This association's mission is to provide access to professional, free and independent advice. Across Germany, 17 counseling centers in 14 federal states are active to support the victims.
Support for those affected ranges from practical help in dealing with the consequences of right-wing violence to comprehensive advice that guarantees anonymous support. Every year, the VBRG helps hundreds of people affected by attacks.
With the latest measures and ongoing support, Saxony-Anhalt is ensuring that the voices of the victims are heard. It shows that even in difficult times it is important to strengthen the community and support those affected.
