Flood protection in Bernburg: 12.5 million euros for safety!
There is a lot of investment in flood protection in Bernburg! There are currently two construction phases underway on the western bank of the Saale, and one section has already been completed. As the MZ reported, the construction work is part of an extensive measure that will cost a total of around 12.5 million euros. This money comes from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). On Friday, June 27th, Environment Minister Armin Willingmann and Martina Große-Sudhues will present the news directly on site.
But that's not all, because flood protection measures are a key concern of the state government. According to the LVWA Funding programs such as the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and ERDF are available to promote improvements in flood protection. The aim is to better protect the population from potential flood events, especially in the municipalities in Saxony-Anhalt.
Current challenges caused by weather events
The need for such measures is particularly underlined by the increasing number of severe weather events. Weather services regularly warn of heavy rain and hail, which can cause significant damage in many regions, including Saxony-Anhalt. In this context, the MWU indicates that climate change is increasing the frequency of such extreme weather events. Heavy rain not only causes flash floods, but can also lead to dangerous mudslides, especially on slopes.
The dangers of heavy rain are diverse: rapid surface runoff and backwater at bottlenecks such as bridges are just some of the challenges that cities and communities face. Those responsible are therefore working to minimize damage to the municipal infrastructure and educate citizens about appropriate protective measures. Funding programs from the EU, federal and state governments play a crucial role here.
Practical measures and support
It is important for property owners to take responsible precautionary measures. Structural adjustments and taking out natural hazard insurance are recommended. In addition, municipalities should carry out risk analyzes in order to identify areas at risk and take targeted action. All of this information can also be found in the new information flyers from the Ministry of the Environment.
Integrating these funded programs into local planning is essential. This is the only way to ensure a future-oriented improvement in flood protection so that the population can be offered better protection even in extreme weather conditions. This makes it clear: Flood protection is a high priority not only for municipalities, but for every individual in the country.
In the meantime, the sports and leisure center in Aschersleben offers a completely different kind of break. Maintenance work will be carried out there from June 30th to August 10th and the swimming pools and various leisure activities will unfortunately remain closed. Students at the Dr.-Carl-Hermann-Gymnasium, on the other hand, have the opportunity to complete internships at Stadtwerke Schönebeck and gain their first insight into professional life - so things remain exciting in the region!
