There is news about an important environmental project in Saxony-Anhalt: the new course of the Selke, which runs between Hoym and Gatersleben, was inaugurated at the beginning of November. Environment Minister Armin Willingmann (SPD) and Mario Hohmann, head of the dam operations (TSB), gave the starting signal after an intensive eight-month construction period. The revitalization of the Selke was initiated as part of the compensatory measures for a planned flood retention basin near the Harzgerode district of Straßberg. A total of around four million euros flowed into the project, with 60% of the funds coming from the federal government and 40% from the state of Saxony-Anhalt. This investment is intended to help restore the river's natural beauty and function.
Comprehensive compensatory measures
The new course of the Selke river measures around 1.5 kilometers and is therefore around 400 meters longer than the old course. Particularly noteworthy is the ecological improvement of the water. The course was designed in a variety of ways with river loops, sand banks and depressions in the riverbed. These developments allow the river to develop naturally in a defined corridor. Willingmann also announced that a total of 52 measures are planned to compensate for the environmental impact of the flood retention basin, with the revitalization of the Selke being the largest among them.

This will help prevent severe flooding in the Selke river basin.
