Police caught speeders: speed checks in the Salzland district!

A lot is happening in the Salzland district when it comes to traffic safety and speed controls. On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, police officers in Westdorf were out and about catching speeders. A total of 243 vehicles were measured on Welbslebener Straße, and the results were revealing. According to the smiley board evaluation, a shocking 90% of drivers from the direction of Aschersleben drove faster than permitted in May. But today the number was limited: only ten speed offenders were identified, with the fastest driver traveling at 75 km/h. The affected drivers must prepare for fine notices that will be sent out in the coming days.

The police are actively committed to ensuring road safety. It is interesting to note that a week earlier, similar checks took place in Calbe and Bernburg, where 195 vehicles were checked. Here, 29 drivers were traveling too fast, including one particularly striking case: a driver was speeding at 36 km/h in a traffic-calmed zone where only 10 km/h was allowed. In Bernburg, seven speeding offenders were registered again on Monday, the fastest exceeding the speed limit at 72 km/h in a 50 zone. As Tixio reports, all affected drivers will soon receive their fine notices.

Causes and consequences of speeding

The problem of speeding should not be underestimated. According to KFV, speed has a decisive influence on the risk of accidents and the severity of traffic accidents. Almost two thirds of all traffic accidents occur in local areas, and a significant proportion of those injured and killed are unprotected road users. The statistics are particularly alarming: an average of over 15,000 accidents occur on municipal roads every year, which shows a clear need for action.

Given the high number of accidents, it could be helpful to intensify speed enforcement on municipal roads. In Austria in particular, it is emphasized that many drivers do not adhere to the permitted speeds. Over 71% of car drivers exceed the 30 km/h limit in the local area. This means that road safety is facing major challenges and it is time to take effective measures to counteract this trend.
