Remembrance and processing: Discussion after the Magdeburg attack

On Tuesday, July 1st, the interdisciplinary lecture series entitled “The attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market and its consequences” ends at the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences. This series of events, which started on April 22nd, attracted over 300 participants and offers a comprehensive review and outlook on the role of universities in crisis situations. The discussion begins at 6:15 p.m., in House 14, Lecture Hall 2, on the Breitscheidstrasse campus. The event is organized by Prof. Dr. Claudia Nothelle and Prof. Dr. Matthias Quent, who also takes over the moderation. The Rector of the Otto von Guericke University, Prof. Dr. Jens Strackeljan, and the vice-rector of the university, Prof. Dr. Kerstin Baumgarten will also be a guest and will offer space for critical reflections and suggestions.

Sad background of remembrance

The reason for this lecture series is the terrible attack that was carried out at the Magdeburg Christmas market on December 20, 2024. An attacker drove an SUV into the crowd, causing six deaths and over 300 injuries, many of whom were seriously affected. The alleged perpetrator is now in custody and the trial will begin later this year. The incident raised questions about security measures not only in Magdeburg but far beyond. These have not yet been fully clarified to this day, which also affects people who are directly affected, such as the temporary worker Bastian-Joel Hein, who helped care for the injured and has been suffering from delusions ever since.

A permanent memorial is planned to commemorate the victims. Candles burn every day in front of St. John's Church, and the square is decorated with stuffed animals left there by mourners. The mayor of Magdeburg, Simone Borris, is also planning to mark the first anniversary of the attack with dignity. The Christmas market is scheduled to take place again in 2025 at the same location, which is causing mixed reactions from the population.

Processing and questions of responsibility

The tragic events have also led to an investigative committee in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt, which was set up to clarify responsibilities. The committee chairwoman Karin Tschernich-Weiske has already expressed her disillusionment with the results so far. It remains to be seen whether the required clear responsibilities can be created. Since the attack, people with a migrant background have also felt increasingly exposed to hostility, which has further increased social tensions.

The lecture series not only offers a space for reflecting on the events and their consequences, but also for discussion about the role of universities in future crises. To this end, the university's students are encouraged to actively submit questions and suggestions in order to enrich the debate and address their personal concerns.
