Important railway lines in Germany: renovations delayed until 2035!

After Deutsche Bahn recently announced a postponement of the renovation of important railway lines, the question arises: How long will travelers and freight traffic now have to wait for the urgently needed modernizations? It could take until 2035 for the renovation work to be completed - that's four years longer than originally planned Borken newspaper reported. This proposal was put forward by DB during an information event in the industry and is causing heated discussions.

The routes affected are numerous and the delays are impressive:

  • Die Strecke Bremen–Hamburg wird nun erst 2031 saniert, statt 2028.
  • Abschnitt Wunstorf–Minden der ICE-Strecke Hannover–Ruhrgebiet rückt erst auf 2034, zuvor war 2028 anvisiert.
  • Bremen–Osnabrück sowie Osnabrück–Münster werden von 2030 auf 2033 verschoben (drei Jahre) und weitere Verschiebungen sind zu verzeichnen.

New challenges for the railway

Deutsche Bahn plans to complete the modernization of around 40 busy railway lines by the mid-2030s, after this work was originally planned for the early 2030s. As the daily news reported, a reduction in annual corridor renovations to four to five is also part of the project. This means that there will be fewer projects going on at the same time in the future, which will not necessarily ease the situation on the rails.

The planned general renovations are part of a comprehensive program by Deutsche Bahn, which also includes the renovation of the infrastructure, operations and an improvement in economic efficiency, such as German railway communicates. The aim is to restore rail performance by 2027 and at the same time increase punctuality.

The general renovations are intended not only to improve the infrastructure, but also to make traveling by rail more attractive again. The railway has set itself the goal of increasing punctuality in long-distance transport to 75 to 80 percent by 2027. However, there is skepticism within the industry and among passengers as to whether this goal is realistic.

Impact on passengers

The planned renovation work will inevitably lead to restrictions for travelers. Long journey times and replacement buses in regional transport are just some of the challenges that rail travelers face, while some of the most frequented routes are closed completely. Nevertheless, Deutsche Bahn has set itself the goal of improving the travel experience by investing in infrastructure. The ongoing discussions with the railway industry, associations and countries are intended to ensure that the restructuring concept is adapted to the needs of all those involved.

Finally, it remains to be seen whether the railway's proposal, although it has not yet been finally decided, can actually lead to a noticeable improvement in punctuality and reliability on the rails. It will be exciting to see what the next steps look like and what reactions the developments will provoke among passengers.
