Ukrainian refugees in Saxony-Anhalt: Jobs on the rise!

Sachsen-Anhalt, Deutschland - More and more refugees from Ukraine are able to build a new life in Saxony-Anhalt. Currently there are 7,300 Ukrainians who have found a job. Compared to the previous year, this is an increase of 2,000. Minister of Labor Petra Grimm-Benne (SPD) emphasizes that women with children in particular face special challenges when it comes to working. Most of the Ukraine employees work in the processing of businesses, trade and in health and social affairs. Many of their new homeland have also found a good hand for the position in the construction and hospitality industry. Even in the economic service sector, including temporary work and horticulture, numerous Ukrainians are active, as MDR reported.

Integration into the labor market is progressing quickly. In November 2024, 6,600 people from Ukraine were already employed, which means an increase of 5,400 employees compared to the time before the Russian attack war in February 2022. 5,700 of these people work liable for social security, while 900 are active in minor jobs. Men in particular find jobs in the processing business, construction, as well as in traffic and in warehouse management. Women, on the other hand, mainly work in the processing of businesses, the hospitality industry and in other economic services. The labor market integration thus represents an important part of the reality of many refugees, which also confirms the Federal Center for Political Education

challenges and opportunities

Despite this progress, the situation remains complex. There are currently around 6,000 unemployed people from Ukraine, which shows that there is a need for further integration measures. Of these people, 2,600 participate in integration courses, 1,100 are still in language courses professionally, and 270 take part in special programs for labor market integration. The integration rate was 29.7 percent in November 2024. These figures are an indication that the challenge is not only in the provision of suitable jobs, but also in the imparting of cultural and linguistic skills that are important for work.

A look into the past shows that the labor market access for refugees has been reformed in recent years. A lot has happened since the large refugee flows in 2015. Institutional changes ensured that the integration of asylum seekers into the labor market was accelerated. The legal references to language and integration courses in particular are important milestones that many refugees have well received. This was also underlined by the Federal Center for Political Education

shape the future

For companies in Saxony-Anhalt, the workforce potential of refugees becomes particularly interesting. In view of the demographic development and a noticeable shortage of skilled workers, workers from home and abroad, especially from Ukraine, are urgently needed. However, the current dynamics on the labor market shows weaknesses of how different statistics show. Nevertheless, the prospect is that the integration of refugees into society and the labor market must continue to be pursued in order to master today's challenges.

Overall, the steady increase in employees from Ukraine encourages. The positive development on the labor market and the will of the refugees to actively contribute to their new society stand for a hopeful future. May the integration continue to be so successful!
