Chagall in Wittenberg: Biblical colors delight art lovers
On Friday, August 16th, the exhibition “Chagall paints the Bible” was ceremoniously opened in the St. Marien church in Wittenberg. This event took place as part of Israel Sunday and was organized in collaboration with the Wittenberg Christian Art Foundation. In wonderful weather, around 100 guests were able to enjoy a varied program, which was rounded off with sensitive organ music by Marin Ludewig. On the impressive Sauer organ, she played works by Buxtehude, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Zwart and Dubois while visitors got in the mood for the upcoming opening.
The exhibition includes eight color lithographs, most of which date from 1956, and feature some of the most impressive biblical motifs. These include, among others, the prophet Moses with the tablets of the law, King David and the lamentation of Jeremiah. The introduction to the exhibition was given by Dr. Hanna Kasparick, who invited the guests to take a closer look at the pictures and go on a journey of discovery. She particularly emphasized the “horns” of Moses and the symbolic role of the donkey in the Jeremiah images. “These works are windows into the world of our religious foundation,” said Dr. Kasparick.
Art and religion in dialogue
The exhibition “Chagall Painting the Bible” is not only a look at the art of the great painter Marc Chagall, but also an opportunity to reflect on the deep religious images and stories that have shaped us for centuries. The term “art” itself has a long historical root and is derived from the Middle Low German “kunst”, which means “knowledge” and “skill”. This definition shows that art is more than just visual representation; it also refers to the ability to express knowledge and emotions. This connection between art and spirituality becomes impressively clear in the exhibition.
The exhibition is open until the end of October and heralds an exciting time for those interested in art and culture in the region. The combination of Chagall's vibrant colors and the biblical stories invites you to marvel and reflect.
A successful start
The opening was accompanied with warm greetings from Christhard-Georg Neubert, chairman of the Christian Art Foundation, who was not personally present but made his support for the project clear. The positive response from those present shows that such cultural events are very popular and combine interest in art and religion.
With this exciting exhibition, Wittenberg proves once again how important the dialogue between art and faith is and that the examination of our roots always remains relevant. Anyone who would like to learn more about Chagall's impressive works now has the opportunity to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of art and biblical motifs.
