Danube cycle path: Bavaria's insider tip on the podium of long-distance cycle paths!

With 20,600 searches, it ranks third among the most popular cycle paths in the country. The two top places go to the Elbe Cycle Path and the Weser Cycle Path, which arouse significantly more interest with 32,500 and 31,000 search queries.

The Danube cycle path stretches over around 600 kilometers from Donaueschingen in Baden-Württemberg to Passau in Lower Bavaria and takes cyclists past picturesque cities such as Ingolstadt and Regensburg. This river cycle path, which will turn 40 years old in 2024, is considered one of the most beautiful of its kind in Europe.

Attractiveness of long-distance cycle routes

The ADFC's evaluation shows that the Danube cycle path is not only popular in terms of popularity, but also in terms of quality. It's no secret that more and more people are discovering cycling holidays and want to enjoy the freedom on two wheels. Aside from the popular nature and the charming cities, there are many other factors that decide whether cyclists choose to travel.

According to the ADFC-Radreiseanalyse, trends in cycle tourism in Germany have been recorded since 1999. The ADFC is particularly interested in the travel behavior and needs of cycling holidaymakers. Over 10,000 people take part in the annual online surveys, which cover a variety of aspects including socio-demographic factors, travel destinations and average mileage per day.

The results of the next ADFC cycling analysis will be published in 2026 and we can be excited to see how demand develops further will. One thing is certain: the Danube Cycle Path will remain popular with cyclists in the future, especially because of its impressive route and the variety it has to offer.
