The FREIEN WÄHLER Saxony-Anhalt took a decisive step towards the state elections in 2026 on November 8, 2025 in Naumburg (Saale). The state list for the upcoming elections was chosen. André Weber, who was elected as the top candidate in first place on the list, comes from the Harz district, followed by Rebecca Resch from the Burgenland district and Kay Gericke, who is running in the Jerichower Land.

But the list offers even more: the other places include, for example, Dr. Maik Mattheis from Wittenberg, Falko Kadzimirsz from Halle/Saale and Ronny Schneider from Anhalt-Bitterfeld. Isabell Schulze, Jerome Querfurth, Maximilian Kullack and Danny Becker have also secured a place on the list. The diversity of the candidates is highlighted by state chairwoman Andrea Menke. It shows that the candidates not only come from different regions, but also represent different age groups and professional backgrounds.

Looking into the future

André Weber sees the upcoming state election as a “destiny election” for Saxony-Anhalt. In his eyes, the region has been greatly weakened over the last 20 years by the long-term coalition of the CDU and SPD. Topics such as debt, incapacitated municipalities and canceled classes were discussed, as were the urgent requirements of a modern economy and the need for digitalization. The aim of the FREIEN WÄHLER is to achieve a better result in the election than in the 2021 state election, where they only received 3.1 percent of the votes.

The election program will also be developed in the coming weeks and will be presented in March 2026. In addition, the direct candidates are elected in the constituencies to ensure strong representation in the communities.

Elections in Germany

Elections are a cornerstone of our democracy. As the State Center for Political Education in Saxony-Anhalt explains, elections are not only general, equal and free, but also secret. Anyone who is at least 18 years old on election day and has German citizenship is allowed to cast their vote. Voters have two votes available - the first vote for a candidate in the constituency and the second vote for a party's state list.

This means that in Germany up to 299 of the 630 mandates in the federal election will be awarded as direct mandates, based on the vote cast on election day. The barrier clause is also relevant for parties; They must either receive at least five percent of the second votes nationwide or a majority of the first votes in at least three constituencies in order to enter parliament.

The federal election will take place on February 23, 2025. Voters will traditionally fill out their ballot papers with pen and paper, as voting via smartphone is not possible. Anyone who has not received their election notification should contact the municipality or city administration in good time.

With this background, the FREIEN VÖHLER must set the course early in order to be able to appear successfully in both the state and federal elections. Let's wait and see how the political landscape will develop by then.
