Cheers and hustle and bustle in Wittenberg: 500 years of Luther’s wedding celebrated!

Last weekend, historic Wittenberg was a scene of jubilation and hustle and bustle as the city celebrated the 500th anniversary of the wedding of Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora. The grandiose parade began at 2 p.m. at the Luther House and attracted around 60,000 visitors to the old town, who embarked on a journey back in time to the era of the Reformation. The parade, in which around 2,000 participants took part in historical costumes, was led by the impressive city guard and the fanfare from Wittenberg. MZ.de reports that the streets were lined with enthusiastic spectators who were able to experience the lively depiction of history up close.

The participants in the parade were diverse: among others, washerwomen, the Leucorea village of Bystrica, Apollensdorf winegrowers and the Pratau farming community were represented. The audience gave special applause to the Luther couple, who were embodied by District Administrator Christian Tylsch and his wife Selina. The Electoral hunters and Landsknechts were also part of the hustle and bustle, while Mayor Torsten Zuehör distributed chocolate thalers and ensured a good atmosphere.

A celebration for the whole family

The spectacle was not only a historical event, but also a celebration for the whole family. 13 adventure worlds were set up in the city center, providing entertainment for both children and adults. The temperatures climbed to around 30 degrees Celsius, which helped visitors with refreshing water from washerwomen's vats. [n-tv].

The highlight of the festival was a 500-meter-long wedding table, which had an area for singles. Visitors were also able to enjoy concerts, a children's theater and a medieval tournament show. This festival was not only a tribute to the past, but also a vibrant way to strengthen community and keep traditions alive.

A look into the future

Wittenberg is not only known for this special occasion. The next big event is coming up on October 31, 2024: The Reformation Festival, which commemorates the publication of Martin Luther's 95 theses in 1517, will be celebrated with a variety of events. Historical market spectacles, guided tours and festive services are on the program. Craftsmen demonstrate their artistic skills, while the culinary offerings range from warm mead to fresh baked goods. The city of Wittenberg will continue to host events that celebrate its rich history and thrive as a vibrant center of Reformation history. Wittenberger Reformationsfest offers a lot of information about the planned events.

Overall, the parade for Luther's wedding was a complete success and showed the city's connection to its history as well as the joy of its citizens and guests. Such events help keep Martin Luther's legacy alive and establish the city of Wittenberg as a cultural center.
