Martin Luther University Halle: Fifth award for family friendliness!

The Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) sets a strong example for the compatibility of work and family. After a successful dialogue process, MLU received the certificate for a family-friendly university for the fifth time on June 17, 2025 in Berlin. This is not only an award, but also shows the university's long-term commitment to family-friendly working and study conditions.

The Rector of MLU, Prof. Dr. Claudia Becker received the certificate from Mareike Wulf, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs. “The MLU has been actively pursuing a family-friendly university policy for over a decade,” emphasizes Becker, and points out the importance of the constant further development of these structures. The university has had the certificate since 2009, with previous re-audits in 2012 and 2015.

A lasting seal of quality

Thanks to the streamlined dialogue process of berufundfamilie Service GmbH, MLU can now use the quality seal permanently. Rector Prof. Dr. Christian Tietje emphasizes that the university is not only based on current standards, but that continuous monitoring of the status quo is also necessary. Over 140 measures have been implemented since 2009, including the “Weinberg Kids” facility, which offers short-term and off-peak care for children.

The decision to award the certificate is made by an independent board of trustees who ensure that the principles of family justice are firmly anchored in the university's organizational culture. The next quality assurance review is due in three years to define new human resources policy goals.

A strategic management tool

The family-friendly university audit serves as a strategic management tool that aims to make study and working conditions family-friendly. It takes into account the diversity of lifestyles and family types. It is essential that family-friendly orientation is integrated into the university strategy in order to ensure a high level of penetration of these measures. This is supported not only by a needs analysis and the determination of development potential, but also by defining concrete goals in eight fields of action.

  • Arbeits-, Forschungs- und Studienzeit
  • Arbeits-, Forschungs- und Studienorganisation
  • Arbeits-, Forschungs- und Studienort
  • Information und Kommunikation
  • Führung
  • Personalentwicklung und wissenschaftliche Qualifizierung
  • Entgeltbestandteile, geldwerte Leistungen und Studienfinanzierung
  • Service für Familien

The measures taken reflect a holistic approach that improves the university environment for all members of the university. Prof. Dr. Claudia Becker and her team are firmly behind the vision of further developing MLU as a family-friendly institution.
