Revolution on the road: Intelligent tires replace winter checks!

The cold season is just around the corner and with it the annual discussion about whether winter tires are mandatory. While there are no fixed dates for this in Germany, drivers in some neighboring countries have had to switch to winter tires since November 1st. The legal regulation is not only aimed at increasing road safety, but could soon become unnecessary. Loud chip “Smart tires” could come onto the market that adapt to different weather and road conditions. These tires change shape to optimize grip on the road.

The idea sounds promising: When it's wet, the tires shrink to prevent aquaplaning, and extendable spikes are even used when it snows. This technology could significantly reduce the need for chains or special equipment and make driving in winter conditions safer and more comfortable. Explained like this chip, that these tires are currently not available and no specific release date or price is known.

Winter tire requirements: A look at the regulations

In Germany, winter tires are required depending on the situation. This means that winter tires are mandatory in winter road conditions. But even if there is no official deadline, an old rule of thumb is based on the period from October to Easter. However, this regulation is not legally binding. The ADAC points out that winter or all-season tires with the Alpine symbol must be installed on at least all four wheels. A violation can be punished with a fine of 60 euros and one point in Flensburg, or even 80 euros if it impedes other road users.

Particularly important: From October 1, 2024, only tires with the Alpine symbol (3PMSF) may be used. Old M+S tires that were produced before 2018 are then no longer permitted. The minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm is required by law, although the ADAC recommends having at least 4 mm. It is also important to note that in the event of an accident with summer tires in winter, the comprehensive insurance can reduce or completely refuse the benefit. Caution is advised here so as not to be stuck with the costs.

What do the experts say?

The recommendations of the ADAC and other experts are clear: Winter tires must be checked regularly and, if necessary, replaced in a timely manner to ensure safety. There are also special regulations for car rental companies, which must provide roadworthy vehicles in winter. A tenant can therefore refuse to hand over a car with summer tires.

Drivers should also be aware that there are differences in winter tire requirements in other countries. Before traveling abroad, it is advisable to check the applicable rules carefully. This means that unpleasant surprises, be it fines or a lack of security, can be avoided.

In summary, we can only hope that technological innovations such as intelligent tires will soon find their way onto our roads. These could not only make driving easier, but also ensure greater safety in winter traffic. And that would be a good reason to look forward to the cold season!
