The meaning of the Lutherkutte

The Lutherkutte is not just a piece of clothing, but a symbol of the religious renewal movement in the 16th century, which also included Luther. He wore the cowl until 1524 to break with the Catholic monks. This important fact is emphasized again and again, because the cowl reflects the time and the movement that the church wanted to reform. The EKD points out that the authenticity of the cowl cannot be demonstrated without any doubt.

A new figurine is being developed, which should make it possible to better distribute the weight of the robe so that the cowl can be presented in their complete splendor. From 2027, the restored cowl will be part of a new permanent exhibition in the Wittenberg Luthermuseums, which will receive visitors as Luther would have done as a host.

The restored parts of the cowl will show how important it is for the exhibition and the history of effects in Luther. The Elector Frederick the Weise gave Luther the robe in 1521/22, and since 1983 it has been part of the collection of the Luther memorials in Wittenberg. It is currently part of the special exhibition "Literally Luther" in Augusteum.
