Doctor hikes 750 kilometers barefoot: An adventure with dogs and heart!
August 16, 2025 brings exciting news from the region. The doctor Frank Jester, who comes from Lower Saxony, inspires people with his extraordinary idea of hiking barefoot from East to West Germany. The tour, which measures approximately 750 kilometers, began at the end of July 2025 in the picturesque Zentendorf, a small community in Neißeaue. Jester covers an impressive 30 kilometers every day and is currently traveling in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Together with his faithful collie Lando, he has spent the last few weeks traveling through a wide variety of landscapes and encounters. Unfortunately, due to the persistently high temperatures, Lando had to end the hike early and was picked up by a friend. “It wasn’t easy, but we really enjoyed our time together,” said Jester about his experiences with his four-legged friend.
Wonderful encounters along the way
Jester reports on the warm hospitality he received during his trip in Saxony. Many kind people helped him wherever they could. In Königsbrück the doctor received an umbrella and a rain poncho from a helpful man, while in Großenhain a cyclist offered him delicious cheese sandwiches. These small gestures of support give him strength for the further journey.
Jester covers his financial needs on his own and refuses monetary donations. This particularly impressed two women in Liebschützberg, who each wanted to offer him ten euros for dog food. "I don't want to assume anything. For me it's about the experience and the encounters," he explains.
Important stops on the journey
A special highlight was the reception in the New Town Hall in Leipzig on August 1, 2025. The economic mayor Clemens Schülke (CDU) welcomed Jester and presented him with apples as food. Such gestures show how much people support his project.
In Böhlitz-Ehrenberg he was also allowed to stay in a hotel for free and had the pleasure of meeting the mayor of Machern, Karsten Frosch (CDU). “It was a great conversation that motivated me to keep going,” says Jester enthusiastically.
He has already set his sights on his destination, the Dutch border, for the coming week. Jester is full of energy and says: "It all feels like a big adventure. I'm looking forward to the kilometers to come and the people I'll meet."
This trip is not only a personal adventure for Jester, but also shows the value of human encounters and local support. If you would like to find out more about your experiences, you can read a current report MDR read up.
