Munich plans Baumschule Laim”: Green light for construction!
Willibaldstraße, 80689 München, Deutschland - On June 6, 2025, the city of Munich presented important plans for the expansion of the subway. The focus is on the new “Baumschule Laim” underground station, which will be built on Willibaldstrasse. This train station forms part of the U5 extension in the west of the city, which aims at a structural link between Laim and Pasing. The design of the train station is led by the architecture firm Allmannwappner and is intended to commemorate a tree area, inspired by the over 80 years of tree school in the district.
The architectural highlights of the new station include wall clothing that abstract trees in structured ceramic elements, as well as access in fresh green tones and a stylized metal leaf roof. Well -thought -out lighting concepts that integrate selective lights and light stales ensure a pleasant atmosphere. Stainless steel tree silhouettes are also placed in striking areas.
Details on the infrastructure
The subway station will have two outputs at the intersections of Gotthard-/Reutterstraße and Gotthard/Willibaldstrasse. In addition, three elevators, four escalators and six stairs are planned. The platform will be 120 meters long and eight meters wide, while the entire platform hall is to reach a height of 7.5 meters and a width of 15 meters. The platform will also be 12 meters below the surface.
The new subway station is expected to be completed in 2030, while the entire U5 extension is to be completed by 2034. There are concerns in the Laimer district committee with regard to an simultaneous opening of all new subway stations that are part of the U5 extension between Laim and Pasing and extend over a route length of 3.8 kilometers. The estimated total costs for the project amount to around 1.3 billion euros. However, the Laimer district committee unanimously approved the plans, and architecture documents will be publicly visible in the U5-Infocenter from June 25th, such as Ubahnbau-muenchen.de Regular updates.
Overall, the expansion of the subway in Munich shows that the city is determined to quickly expand the public transport network and thus promote modern, resource-friendly mobility for citizens. By 2030, it should be aimed at the fact that around 30 percent of the paths in Munich will be covered by local public transport, as the Baureferat reports .
