Ballenstedt: Students explore Jewish life against anti -Semitism!

A remarkable project is carried out in a significant initiative to promote tolerance and to reduce prejudices at the Wolterstorff-Gymnasium in Ballenstedt. Under the direction of the Jewish Museum Berlin, the students deal intensively with Jewish life to show cultural diversity and to fight against growing anti -Semitism. According to Tagesschau Investation Historian Johannes Schwarz and Alex Green a lot of energy in this exchange and creating opportunities, to introduce the students to Jewish culture.

The students bring personal items with them, which are presented in an exhibition, which gives the project a very personal touch. In view of the alarming numbers of anti-Semitic incidents in Saxony-Anhalt, which rose to 202 cases in 2024-an increase of 13% compared to the previous year-such initiatives are more important than ever. In the school year 2023/2024, nine reports on anti -Semitism were recorded in schools, while there are already six in the current school year.

an important contribution to diversity

Josef Wutte, teacher and supervisor of the AG "School without racism, school with courage", is significantly involved in the organization of the project. "Our goal is to bring the diversity of society closer to the students," he explains. The students shape an exhibition that shows Jewish life and learn to change perspectives. In the words of anger and historians, the importance of the education about different religions is emphasized in order to promote acceptance and tolerance.

The students themselves express that they consider the project to be important to reduce clichés and create a common understanding. However, anger has concerns about the future of such projects and hopes for appropriate political support to ensure the sustainability of this important work.

Support by additional educational projects

In addition to this project, there are also steps in North Rhine-Westphalia to prevent anti-Semitism and convey Jewish diversity. The Malmad project, an innovative concept that was developed by the service center for anti-discrimination work by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (SABRA), offers a virtual method case for anti-Semitism educational work. Materials and methods are provided here that are intended to promote discriminatory use in schools. Information on this can be found on the website of the School Ministry NRW .

Another point that should not be left unmentioned in this context is the report by the 2015 German-Israeli Schoolbook Commission. This shows that many school books convey a one-sided picture of Judaism, often only designed for religious education. Against this background, it becomes clear why there are increasingly need for new materials for imparting Jewish life and identities.

Overall, it can be said that both the project at the Wolterstorff High School and the initiatives in North Rhine-Westphalia together help to promote respectful and tolerant coexistence. Those responsible and students are determined to make a sustainable contribution in order to strengthen diversity and acceptance in society. These important steps will continue to support politics and public in the future.
