Blooming pots and creative ideas: Hoyerswerda's urban development is blooming!

A lot is happening in Hoyerswerda and the city is showing off its thriving side. Forty-nine colorful plant pots now decorate the old town and new town. These pretty vessels are located in central locations such as Kirchstraße, Markt and Einsteinstraße, to name just a few. With flowering geraniums and cannas, they give the city a fresh, inviting look. As the Saxon reports, the main focus of this campaign is not only on beautification, but also on supporting local businesses.

Care and watering are carried out by hard-working partners from the HOY marketing association, and the commitment continues with the “HOY is nothing happening yet?” campaign. This initiative is accompanied by regular event flyers equipped with a QR code. This means that citizens can quickly get information about activities in Hoyerswerda. The brochure “Family Time HOY” provides information about twelve family-friendly facilities and was created without funding. New listings include the Seenland Adventure Park and the CineMotion cinema.

Action with an uncertain future

But what does the future of these plant pots look like? The “Sustainable City Centers and Centers” funding program expires on August 31st, and it remains unclear whether the colorful buckets will also be set up next year. However, the marketing association plans to recruit local dealers and business owners to continue the campaign. In addition, a free training course on social media, artificial intelligence and digital marketing will take place on June 30th - a real win for the business world.

The Green Seam and citizen participation

In parallel to these developments, work is also being done on the Green Seam concept in Hoyerswerda. Like on the official one City website can be read, committed citizens have invested over 1000 hours of voluntary work in developing proposals. Mayor Torsten Ruban-Zeh praised the commitment and cooperation of everyone involved. 28 advisory boards were involved in several all-day meetings to develop the concept for this new experience space.

The aim of the Municipal Development Advisory Board (KEB) is to strengthen democracy and include different perspectives in urban development. Exciting ideas have already emerged, including the implementation of seven sub-measures. Residents and future users of the facilities should be actively involved in the processes, with the KEB being transferred to a municipal implementation advisory board (KUB) in which interested citizens can participate.

Participation and challenges

The urge for citizen participation is not just an issue in Hoyerswerda. According to the Difu In many cities in Germany, intensive work is being done on citizen participation, especially in large-scale urban development projects. It is clear from the planning processes that the population demands more say and changes in communication between local politics and civil society are necessary.

With all of these initiatives, Hoyerswerda shows that commitment and citizen participation can go hand in hand to make the city more livable for everyone. A little bit of green can make a big difference!
