New construction of the Großröhrsdorf town church: A place of community is being created!
The town church in Großröhrsdorf, a landmark of the community, experienced a tragic fate in August 2023. After a devastating fire that was deliberately started by a 41-year-old man, the structure burned to the ground. The perpetrator was sentenced to nine years in prison in February 2024 for aggravated arson because he acted out of hatred for the church community. The fire ruins are not without consequences: the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Großröhrsdorf-Kleinröhrsdorf has begun the reconstruction of the town church Sächsische.de reports.
In order to give the new church a modern and inviting look, an architectural competition was launched. The parish board has already taken the first steps: an exhibition text is being created to define the requirements for the new plans. Josias Kaiser, a member of the church council, made clear the results of a survey in which around 700 citizens took part. The population wants a new, visible church tower that will shape the city's silhouette. Aspects such as accessibility, child-friendliness and the integration of elements of the old church should also be taken into account, as Katholisch.de reports.
Planning details and competition process
The design for the new city church will be bright, modern and flexible. Inside, approximately 300 seats are planned for services and events, with the possibility of making the space adaptable for smaller groups of 30 to 80 people. Central elements such as the cross and altar, as well as an organ, are integrated into the design. A lounge area and its own church café provide inviting community spaces. The aim is to establish the church as a place for all generations, such as families or groups of children. An outdoor area is also being planned that will serve as a “green oasis” for meetings and open-air services.
The clearing of the fire ruins has already begun, and the costs for the planned new building are estimated at around 35 million euros, which will probably be covered by insurance. Over 520,000 euros in donations have been received so far. After the competition is completed in late autumn 2023, design and approval planning is planned to begin in spring 2026. However, an optimistic start to construction is not expected before mid-2027.
Challenges and opportunities
The parish sees this process not only as a challenge, but also as a great opportunity for the community. Competitions offer the opportunity to find innovative solutions and are a proven method for ensuring planning security and quality, as is also explained on Future Church Spaces. A precise task definition is crucial in order to make the competition successful. Professionals and laypeople work together to develop new church architecture that meets the needs of the community while respecting traditions.
While the plans for the rebirth of the city church take concrete shape, the hope of the community remains unbroken. Work is underway to create a place of faith and gathering that connects people and sets a strong sign of renewal.
