They threatened them with a weapon, tied them up and gagged them so that they could access a supposedly valuable safe, which they believed to be their loot, undisturbed.

Thanks to a new alarm system, the castle owner received news of the break-in in good time and immediately informed the police. This led to a quick intervention by the special forces, during which several perpetrators tried to escape through a window. One of them was injured and was arrested on site. While the investigation is in full swing, the employee managed to free herself and get to safety. Video recordings and their statements confirmed that the perpetrators were armed with firearms, which underlines the seriousness of the attack.

Process start in July 2025

The investigation has revealed four suspects who are said to be involved in another planned break-in at a residential building in Wachau. Two of the suspects, aged 24 and 28, were arrested on January 22nd, while two others fled. The 29-year-old suspected fugitive perpetrator was caught in Hamm, North Rhine-Westphalia, while a 33-year-old accomplice was caught in the asylum home in Niesky.

On July 29, 2025 The trial against the four accused begins at the Görlitz regional court. They are on trial for attempted particularly serious predatory extortion, gang theft and deprivation of liberty. The age group of the defendants varies between 24 and 33 years, although three of them have multiple previous convictions and are in custody.

International dimension

It is interesting that an accomplice who has already been convicted incriminates the defendants and points to the gang's international structures. According to prosecutors, the group aimed to bring stolen goods to Spain and Colombia. With regard to this form of crime, the numbers have increased in recent years, as the statistics show Theft and robbery shows that there will be an increase in thefts in general in 2022.

In 2022, around 5.63 million crimes were recorded in Germany, of which 1.78 million were in the area of theft. Looking back, it can be seen that, despite slight fluctuations, burglaries and robberies have shown a worrying trend in recent years. In North Rhine-Westphalia in particular, there were over 23,500 residential burglaries in 2022, which even accounted for over 35% of all cases in the federal states.

The impending charges against the perpetrators, who demonstrated particular brutality in their attack on Taubenheim Castle, are in the context of a worrying increase in criminal activity and could bring even more movement to the investigation.
