Traffic attempt: Bautzen will make Schloßstraße car -free from July!
On July 21, 2025, an exciting and important traffic attempt starts in Bautzen, which is intended to significantly improve the quality of stay in the city center. At the request of the CDU parliamentary group, the city council gave the green light for the closure of Schloßstraße, which will be blocked between house number 3 and Messengasse from the evening hours for cars. This affects the times from Sundays to Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 6 p.m. to midnight. This attempt will be limited until September 30, 2025 and is intended to strengthen Schloßstraße as a popular catering mile. The idea of freeing the castle road from motorized traffic is no coincidence. In view of the desire for a more lively, car -free old town, it is at the top of the agenda of the urban development concept "Guide 2030+".
residents, restaurants and institutions such as the city library were included in the plans in advance in order to ensure the broadest possible support. A charging zone in front of the Schloßstraße 4 building is set up, so that deliveries are still possible. Fire brigade drives and escape routes remain free at all times in order to grant the security of the highest priority. However, possible economic advantages also face challenges. The discussion about the elimination of parking spaces in the old town creates split opinions, especially since in recent years has been discussed again and again about traffic reduction in historical areas.
Traffic attempts in Cologne: Citizens' initiative brings new ideas
Interestingly,is also a similar attempt in Cologne. As Express reports, the administration plans to try the Deutz freedom into a car-free zone. The proposal comes from a citizens 'initiative from Deutz that has formulated a citizens' application. The planned section extends between Siegburger Straße and Luisenstraße, with the aim of improving the habitat for pedestrians. Here a pedestrian zone with the additional signage "cyclist free" or alternatively a bicycle road is to be set up. However, the transverse traffic of vehicles is not completely dispensed with - only through traffic is excluded.
Although the exact start date of the Cologne traffic attempt has not yet been determined, the initiative shows that the topic of car -free zones in German cities is growing. This could not only contribute to improving the quality of life, but also benefits to local trade. A comprehensive evaluation of the traffic situation should take place both before and during the experiment. With such an approach, one hopes to examine the effects on the business and the living environment of the residents.
framework and trends for car -free zones
The idea of car -free cities is also becoming increasingly important in Germany. According to Foundation for Future Questions , 29% of the population can imagine life without cars in cities. Interest in urban areas and among the younger ones, in which it is twice as high as the over 65-year-olds, is particularly strong. The advantages that a reduction in motorized traffic can bring with it are diverse: they range from health considerations to promoting physical activity to ecological effects.
In a context, where environmental and climate goals are increasingly focusing on, more and more cities are recognizing the need to develop sustainable traffic solutions. Successful examples of car -free cities such as Oslo and Copenhagen show that such concepts not only work, but also have a positive influence on urban development and the local economy. The support for such measures is continuously increasing.
The upcoming traffic attempts in Bautzen and Cologne show that cities specifically work on the implementation of innovative traffic models. It remains exciting how the results of the tests are rated in both cities to generate new ideas for a more livable urban environment.
