Ballet highlight in Zwickau: The colorful Ramayana awaits you!
Today, on September 23, 2025, a very special event will be celebrated in Germany's cultural landscape - the dance theater “Ramayana”. This play takes viewers into the fascinating world of one of India's most famous stories, which is in no way inferior in importance to the Trojan War. Written between the 2nd and 4th centuries, the Ramayana tells the moving story of Prince Rama, who wants to win back his kidnapped wife Sita. MDR reports that a ballet version of this time-honored tale will be seen in Zwickau, stylishly accompanied by Bollywood music and Indian folklore.
Under the direction of ballet director Sergei Vanaev, the ensemble will shine with an impressive dance performance. The critic Katharina Leuoth particularly emphasizes the dancers' performances. Among the main actors are Davide Gentilini as Rama and Minsu Kim as the monkey king Hanuman, whose performances will captivate the audience.
Demonstrations in Zwickau and Plauen
The performance in Zwickau will take place on October 19, 2025 in the Gewandhaus and starts at 7:30 p.m. If you would like to experience the story earlier, you can do so on October 12th and 17th at the Vogtlandtheater in Plauen - both performances start at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively. The entire performance lasts 120 minutes and includes an intermission so that audience members have the opportunity to refresh themselves with a snack.
But the “Ramayana” dance theater is not the only attraction in the region. The puppet theater “Spinnlein, Spinnlein an der Wand” is also performed in Zwickau. It is a magical piece that brings animals to life in just a few simple steps and conveys poetic moments about endurance and inner peace. The performance in the puppet theater will take place on October 4th at 7:30 p.m.
A masterpiece by Mozart
For lovers of classical music, there is a production of Mozart's “Don Giovanni” in the Central Saxon Theater. This performance, which will take place on October 11th at 7 p.m., explores the deep thoughts and feelings of Don Giovanni and will be conducted by José Luis Gutiérrez Hernandez. The stage, decorated with mirrored walls, reflects both the characters and the audience, creating a unique experience.
In addition, the Capital of Culture project in Chemnitz is bringing the performance “Inside Outside Europe”, which stages stories in the same stage setting. Tamó Gvenetadze adapts the tragedy of Medea and addresses German immigration policy. This piece combines clowning with the absurd and offers a critical look at social challenges.
Since its creation, the Ramayana has not only had a firm place in the cultural memory of India, but is also rooted in many other countries in Southeast Asia. The Indosphere highlights that the Ramayana inspires various artistic expressions, from painting to classical dance. Their characters – Rama, Sita and Hanuman – are revered in many cultures as models of virtue and devotion. In Indonesia, too, the Ramayana is kept alive in traditional dance forms and delights audiences in the performances there.
The upcoming cultural program in the region is a real treasure for art and theater lovers. The variety of performances promises to both celebrate traditional Indian culture and combine various artistic approaches from the Western world. These events invite you to immerse yourself in the world of theater and take part in the unique stories.
