Chemnitz breaks records: 705,741 kilometers in CITY CYCLING 2025!

CITY CYCLING in Chemnitz has just come to an end and continues to cause excited discussions. From September 1st to 21st, 2025, citizens got on their bikes, and the result is impressive: a new record was set with 3,649 active cyclists who covered an impressive 705,741 kilometers together. This is reported by the city of Chemnitz chemnitz.de.

The committed participants not only collected kilometers, but also made a significant contribution to climate protection: 116 tons of CO2 were avoided compared to driving a car. All you can say is, “There’s something going on” – many people in Chemnitz followed the call, and the result speaks volumes.

Winners and records

The rankings are full of surprises. Stefanie Zelt from SG Adelsberg e.V. secured the title of most active cyclist with an impressive 1,461.3 km. Sten Brückner from SVC2bike shone as the most active cyclist with an outstanding 2,860.2 km. But the teams also demonstrated their performance. The Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium cycled to the top with 53,330.9 km and shows how the students' commitment can bear fruit.

Awards ceremony and new categories

This year there were also interesting innovations: the awards for the most active schools took place in four subcategories, and for the first time a company with the most bicycle activity was honored. The official winners will be honored at a festive awards ceremony on October 28, 2025 in the auditorium of the Johannes Kepler High School. Mayor Knut Kunze will present the awards and press representatives are cordially invited.

But climate protection goes beyond the borders of Chemnitz. A study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research shows that Germany has the potential to triple the share of cycling by 2035. This could reduce traffic emissions in the local area by 34 percent. The prerequisite for this is an excellent expansion of cycle paths and good bus and train connections. This study shows that cycling not only benefits the climate, but can also significantly increase the quality of life in cities mobilitaetsforum.bund.de.

We look forward to the next rounds of CITY CYCLING and hope that even more people discover the benefits of cycling for themselves. Further information about this great project can be found on the Chemnitz urban planning concept page staedtebau-chemnitz.de.
