Chemnitz is cycling off: City cycling 2025 promises exciting kilometers!

September has begun and Chemnitz is getting on the bike again! From September 1st to 21st, the city is taking part in the nationwide “City Cycling” campaign. The aim of this campaign is to collect as many kilometers as possible through diligent cycling and thus reduce the use of the car. Mayor Sven Schulze highlights the cooperation with the partner city of Düsseldorf, which has adjusted its time period in order to encourage even more people to take part. This year it says: “Chemnitz cycles in step with Düsseldorf”, which shows solidarity between the cities, but also promotes the fun of cycling.

Last year, a proud 3,152 Chemnitz citizens took part in the campaign and cycled a total of 573,416 kilometers. The goal for 2025 is of course to continue to increase these numbers. But the focus is not only on fun, but also on environmental considerations. Around 95 tons of CO2 were avoided by switching to bicycles last year. This is a decent number that shows that everyone can help.

Various events provide a boost

A highlight of this year's campaign will be the rally next Saturday. It starts at the Karl Marx Monument, from where twelve different tours start. The routes are designed for all fitness levels, from short rides of three kilometers to 49 kilometers. Anyone who would like to take part can easily register online. Another highlight of the campaign is the big final tour on September 18th, which starts at 5 p.m. at the Hartmannfabrik. This family-friendly tour covers 18 kilometers and is also intended to raise awareness of inclusive transport design.

Kerstin Fischer-Münzner and three other people from Chemnitz who support the campaign as “city cycling stars” are enthusiastically involved. Fischer-Münzner is part of the “Karl Marx Ballerinas” team and stands for promoting the use of bicycles in everyday life. It turns out that cycling in Chemnitz is not only a balm for the environment, but also a means of promoting health.

A look at the successes of the previous year

Last year's successes are giving this year's city cycling an additional boost. Thanks to the three thousand and fifty participants, the highest values in history were achieved. In addition to a great sense of community, a few clubs and schools were able to win special awards. The Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium was not only the school with the most kilometers covered (46,039 km), but also the most successful team with the most active cycling participants. The fast bees from Immenhof Euba won the award for the most active cyclist and showed how much fun cycling can be.

In the run-up to the city cycling, numerous events enriched the cycling culture in the city, and even the capricious weather couldn't dampen the urge to pedal. The importance of strengthening the environmental network was the main concern of Carina Kühnel, the head of the environmental office.

All in all, Chemnitz is ready to enjoy September on two wheels! Join us and help make our city's streets a little greener! Further information about city cycling can be found on the city website Chemnitz and at Radio Chemnitz.
