An extraordinary day for Cologne baker Michael Schäfer! On July 3, 2025, he received his master's certificate and at the same time remains with his employer Voigt Bakery, faithful. The bakery, which began as a small bakery in Bornheim-Merten over 120 years ago, is celebrating a major anniversary this year. Today the company already has 48 branches in the Rhineland and employs over 700 people who are continuing the traditional bakery trade in the fifth generation.
This year, the newly minted master Schäfer also took on responsibility for training the apprentices. In his new role, he has already welcomed a trainee to the team who recently successfully completed his training. And there is even more new blood: a new apprentice baker will start working for Master Schäfer in the summer, which will secure the future of the craft in the long term.

Career opportunities in the bakery trade
The duration of the training is three years and the requirements are a good secondary school leaving certificate and a minimum age of 17 years. Applicants from the region are particularly welcome, and those changing apprenticeships also have the chance to apply immediately. The bakery trade offers a variety of opportunities, not only in the food trade, but also in the gastronomy and catering sectors.
