Identitarian movement in Chemnitz: New spaces for right-wing extremists in danger!

In the shadow of the noisy city of Chemnitz, a worrying development is emerging: the Identitarian Movement, a group that has come into focus in recent years through high-profile actions across the country, has set up a new center in the Schönau district. How Time online reported that a retail space on Edisonstrasse was acquired and is to be converted into a hub for right-wing extremist activities.

The new property is anything but an inviting place. The entrance door is covered with pleats, the curtains are drawn and inside both a flag of the Identitarian Movement and a German flag hang from the ceiling. The “Center for Counterculture and Activism” was officially announced via a Telegram channel, with numerous events such as regulars’ tables, book launches and social evenings planned.

Marvin Gröger in focus

One of the protagonists of this movement is Marvin Gröger, who is active in the Identitarians in 2024 and lives in Werdau and likes to appear in public. He took part in hikes, regular meetings and reading groups with this group. Marvin drives eye-catching white Audis bearing the license plates Z-MG 5008 and Z-MG 8000, attracting not only local but also national attention IndyMedia reported.

An increasingly daring game

With this new location in Chemnitz, the Identitarian Movement has successfully secured real estate for the fourth time, all of which are under the influence of the right-wing extremist scene. According to the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the acquisition of the premises was discussed at the beginning of 2023, while the functioning of this property was not properly recorded until October 2023. What is particularly explosive is that the project is located near an AfD city council, which creates additional explosiveness.

The new center was only officially inaugurated in November with over 50 guests, including AfD member of the Bundestag Roger Beckamp. A real estate company, Schanze Eins, also plays an important role by acquiring investors for the Identitarian Movement's purchases and thus consolidating its influence in the region.

Resistance in Chemnitz and beyond

Despite the chilled atmosphere in the new center, the reactions from city society are anything but friendly. Torsten Hahnel, an employee of the right-wing extremism office, emphasizes the need for broad resistance against the Identitarians in Chemnitz and is optimistic that they can be defeated as long as the community stands together. Hahnel points to past experiences in Halle an der Saale, where the movement was forced to sell a townhouse due to protests.

The Office for the Protection of the Constitution is closely monitoring the events; after all, many of the right-wing extremist groups that appear in public and their symbols are banned by law. The legal framework is clearly defined, which drastically limits the ability of the Identitarians to openly display their ideology, as stated in the guidelines of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is called.

In the midst of all this unrest, it remains to be seen how the local community will position itself and whether it will be possible to put an end to right-wing extremist efforts in Chemnitz. Either way, one thing is certain: this development requires our full attention.
