Shock in the city center: Armed attack on Freiberg's jeweler!
In the shadow of the Chemnitz regional court, a new trial against Matej B. is gathering pace. September 19, 2023 will be a fateful day for the defendant because he is accused of serious predatory extortion. The case has already raised eyebrows because the young man was arrested after a robbery at a jewelry store on Heubnerstrasse during which he threatened to pull a pistol. The jeweler, who fought back with a courageous decision, was able, together with passers-by, to catch the fleeing perpetrator in front of the shop and hold him until the police arrived. As Blick.de reports, Matej B. had previously served a prison sentence of 2 years and 8 months at the Chemnitz District Court.
Last but not least, one question is raised in the public's imagination: How did such ill-considered action come about? The attack occurred in Freiberg when the defendant entered the store to demand money. Four weeks later, on March 18, 2025, another incident occurred in Chemnitz: a jeweler on Börnichsgasse was also the target of a robbery. A suspected perpetrator, Mohannad Seddik, is on trial here, who speaks extremely worried about sleep disorders and the fear of being persecuted. These circumstances cast a dark shadow over city security.
Theft and Robbery: A Growing Problem
The previous incidents are abnormalities in a larger context. Statistics show that crime in Germany is increasing alarmingly. According to Statista, over 5.63 million crimes were recorded in 2022, and robbery is not excluded. In 2022, there were over 38,000 robbery crimes recorded by the police, even though the number of robbery-homicides has been halved in the last 20 years.
The increase in thefts, which has been noticeable again since 2015, is particularly noticeable. In North Rhine-Westphalia in particular, there were over 23,500 residential burglaries in 2022, which accounts for more than 35% of all cases in the federal states. The clearance rate for residential burglaries is only 16.1%, increasing the need to strengthen security measures. This also affects the jeweler in Chemnitz, who installed new security technology in his shop after the attack.
Safety comes first
The most recent attacks clearly show that the protection of business owners and their customers is the top priority. The jeweler who survived the attack not only had to face the threat posed by the gun carrier, but also continued to live under the fear that such incidents could happen again. Therefore, access to his shop was regulated after careful entry control.
The ongoing trial against Matej B. and the case of Mohannad Seddik, which is also currently being heard, raise essential questions about security in urban areas. When it comes to the safety of citizens, both society and politics must work together to prevent such attacks from occurring in the first place. Because one thing is clear: security is not a luxury, but a basic need. And everyone in our city should be able to experience that.
