Senior citizen robbed on park bench in Chemnitz – police are looking for witnesses!
On Friday, July 19th, an unfortunate incident occurred in Cologne that brings the safety of our older citizens into focus. Shortly before noon, an 80-year-old pensioner was sitting relaxed on a park bench on Stollberger Strasse, near a Rossmann market and an Aldi supermarket. The seemingly friendly moment quickly turned into a dangerous situation when a young woman, about 30 to 35 years old and 1.60 meters tall with a petite figure, asked the senior woman for an ointment and a handkerchief. However, this harmless conversation took a criminal turn when the perpetrator hastily reached into the pensioner's open bag and stole the handbag containing around 100 euros in cash.
After the perpetrator fled to the Dr.-Salvador-Allende-Straße stop and got on a bus, the police were quickly informed. Unfortunately, the search has so far been unsuccessful, although the handbag was later found by passers-by and the wallet was still there. The police are now asking for information from witnesses who noticed something suspicious in the area on Friday morning. Anyone who has information or has found the handbag can contact the criminal police on 0371 387-3448. The description of the alleged perpetrator includes curly black hair, brown eyes and a German-speaking accent.
An important topic: security in old age
This incident highlights the overall safety of seniors in public spaces. According to a report by berlin.de, people in need of care have a right to non-violent care. This also means that they should feel safe in public. Violence in care can occur in a variety of forms, be it by relatives, nursing staff or in inpatient facilities. The police recommend taking legal precautions in good time and taking advantage of counseling services.
So far the situation has proven to be extremely unfortunate for the 80-year-old from Cologne. Her experience should inspire us all to be vigilant and mindful of the needs and safety of older people around us. It is important that we do not look away, but rather actively help ourselves so that such incidents do not become a habit.
