National guard in action: escalate protests in Los Angeles!

in California escalates the situation according to the violent protests against immigration raids. On June 11, 2025, soldiers of the National Guard in Los Angeles were mobilized to support the US immigration authority ICE. The national guards are in use for the protection of the ICE officials and their facilities, which has led to an increase in tensions in the region. Photos published by the ICE show National Gardists who are present in arrests, which stirs up the controversy about the use of the military in civil matters. This was done as part of a federal command ordered by US President Trump, who put the national guard under federal control and mobilized 2,000 soldiers to counteract violent riots.

California's governor Gavin Newsom then submitted an urgent application to a federal court in order to stop the use of the National Guard and the Marine Fantry. Newsoma argues that the use could tighten the tensions and promote civilian unrest. A hearing for his application is scheduled for Thursday. In addition, Newsom Trump's decision criticized the control of the national guard without his consent, and refers to the Posse Comitatus Act that normally prohibits military interventions in law enforcement measures.

riots and protests

The protests led to this military commitment began on June 7 in Compton when ICE raids were carried out against migrants. The crowds, which were made up of around 1,000 demonstrators, expressed their anger due to attacks on ICE vehicles and the police officers who were clamped to enforce the raids. The Ministry of Homeland Security describes these operations as "normal deportations", while the local police and mayor Karen Bass vehemently contradict the raids and classify them as unnecessary and frightening.

In response to the violent protests, Trump announced that other marine fans, a total of 700, from the military base Twentynine Palms to Los Angeles. According to Defense Minister Pete Hegseth, these troops should also be mobilized in order to combat “lawlessness”. Trump, who spoke to the words of his deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, referred to the protests as "violent uprising" against state power.

escalation of the military presence

The use of the National Guard and Marines is viewed by many as an escalation of military violence on American roads. Critics warn that this step violates the Posse Comitatus Act from 1878, which limits military interventions in civil matters. While Trump leaves the opportunity to use the uprising law to legitimize militaristic measures against uprisings, it remains to be seen how the legal challenge of Newsom and others will be in court.

The events in Los Angeles are part of a larger conflict between Trump and Newsom, whose antagonistic relationship is not new. California, with its high Hispanic population, as well as a historically strongly democratic environment, will continue to be the focus, especially in view of the announced military parade in Washington D.C. on June 14th and the associated political implications.

The situation remains tense because the demonstrators were called for peaceful protest attitude, while resistance to Trump's military interventions increasingly grows, but remains disorganized.
