Dresden is suffering from decline: tourism numbers are plummeting!

Tourism in Dresden is experiencing a mixed outcome this year. About 500,000 tourists arrived in the city in the first four months of 2025, a decline of 2% compared to last year. The number of overnight stays fell by 1%, as the Saxon reported. The Dresden marketing company attributes this lull to the late Easter, which only took place at the end of April in 2025 and thus delayed the start of the spring travel season.

Although April 2025 was the most successful travel month of the year with a 5% increase in tourists and 10% more overnight stays compared to April 2024, the positive numbers could not make up for the declines in the first three months. March saw a dramatic 14% decline in overnight guests. Before this development occurred, there was a 12% increase in arrivals and overnight stays in January.

Blind flight and hope

Despite these difficulties, the future looks promising. The proportion of foreign tourists in Dresden is currently 17%, which was over 20% before the corona pandemic. What is particularly notable is that most international visitors come from Poland, followed by Americans, Czechs, Austrians and Swiss. There is also encouraging growth in tourists from Spain, Sweden and Croatia. Dresden Central emphasizes the challenges in international competition and the intention to increase the proportion of foreign guests to around 20%.

The DRV (German Travel Association) is optimistic about Germany's position as a cultural travel destination. Above all, the uncertainties among American vacationers, which often have less to do with geopolitical tensions than with financial challenges, are seen as a possible obstacle. Cultural highlights as driving forces

In 2025, Dresden will draw attention to itself with remarkable cultural events. The 200th anniversary of the ballet at the Semperoper and the celebrations for the 100th birthday of the Palucca University of Dance are approaching. In order to draw attention to these highlights, advertising is being placed on 2,200 spaces in several German cities. A look at the statistics of Dresden Central shows that the city is a popular destination, not only for guests from Saxony, but from all over Germany.

Dresden offers a variety of cultural and architectural attractions as well as excursion destinations in the area, which are attracting more and more tourists. The average length of stay for guests is currently 2.1 nights, indicating high levels of satisfaction. The guest apartments in the Baroque Quarter are particularly popular and offer extended stays with attractive discounts.

Overall, it can be said: the city has potential to grow in the international competition for tourists. The recovery after the pandemic is noticeable, even if the road back to old visitor magnets is still long. It remains to be seen how the trends will develop in the second half of the year.
