Jazztage Dresden: 25 years of festival celebration despite budget cuts!
Under the motto “Anniversary and Challenge”, the Jazztage Dresden will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2025. On this special occasion, which will be celebrated in the Unkersdorf church from September 19th to 21st, 2025, the organizers are building on the roots of the festival, which began there in 2000. But as wochenkurier.info reports, the anniversary is under a shadow - the city's funding has been drastically cut by 55 percent, which represents a significant challenge for the largest crossover jazz festival in Europe.
Kilian Forster, the director of the Jazz Days, and managing director Tanja Grandmontagne have nevertheless launched a new year-round concert format in order to maintain the tradition and continue to promote the exchange between jazz, classical, world music and urban genres. In addition, city district advisory boards from Pieschen, Loschwitz and the old town have helped ensure that individual events can take place throughout the year. Also the support of the cultural committee of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Parish of Linkselbische Täler, represented by Otfried Kotte, emphasizes the importance of the festival for the region.
Cuts and program reductions
However, the current circumstances are forcing the Jazz Days to drastically reduce the program. Instead of the originally planned 100 concerts, only 20 events will take place this year, as [diesachsen.de](https://www.diesachsen.de/kultur/jazztage-dresden- reducen-aus-kostengruenden-das-programm-2913496) reports. The limited staffing of the festival team with four and a half positions makes it impossible for those responsible to realize the festival on the usual scale. Even if the number of visitors in 2023 almost reached the level before the COVID-19 pandemic and the occupancy rate was over 90 percent, a 40 percent increase in costs could not be absorbed.
Intendant Forster was optimistic: a radical reduction in size of the festival is planned for 2024 with the aim of securing the institution for the future. A benefit concert on April 23rd in the Dresden Kulturpalast could help. If everything goes well, the festival in 2025 might dare to make a big return to its old size.
An unmissable event
Over the last 25 years, the Jazz Days have attracted well over 40,000 visitors and presented more than 500 international artists from over 35 nations. The festival sees itself as a platform that not only promotes German jazz, but also stimulates a dialogue between different styles of music. This philosophy follows the tradition of other important jazz events, such as the German Jazz Festival in Frankfurt, which has existed since 1953 and which continuously shapes the development of the scene and provides important impulses, as can be read on the Wikipedia page.
The anniversary program in Unkersdorf is intended to be based on the festival year 2001 and give visitors a nostalgic feeling. And even though times are turbulent, the anticipation for the next Jazz Days remains palpable, not least because the organizers are rising to the challenge with creativity and passion.
