Königsbrücker Straße: Finally progress after 31 years of planning!

In Dresden, a comprehensive renovation of Königsbrücker Straße is imminent, which has been hotly debated for 31 years. This important traffic artery in the north of the city is scheduled to start the construction phase in autumn 2025 with preparatory diversion routes. The actual construction, however, will begin in the summer of 2026 and is scheduled to take three years. The city's traffic planners promise that a noticeable improvement for all road users can be expected from summer 2029. This gave the MDR known.

This renovation includes not only the surface, but also the urgently needed renewal of the underground pipes from SachsenEnergie (drinking water, district heating, gas, electricity) and Stadtentwasserung Dresden GmbH. The lines of Vodafone Kabel Deutschland and Telekom are also affected. According to the city administration, the planning approval decision that creates the building law was issued on May 16, 2024, and the costs of the entire measure amount to around 87 million euros. Funding from the GVFG federal program and the Free State of Saxony should cover up to 80 percent of the costs. This information comes from a communication from the city of Dresden, like this City of Dresden reported.

Diversion measures in focus

In order to be able to carry out the construction smoothly, there will be diversion routes. Tannenstrasse, Schönbrunnstrasse and Eschenstrasse will be upgraded in the fall. Even if one lane on Königsbrücker Straße remains open, temporary diversions may be necessary if there is a lack of space. Unfortunately, this leads to restrictions for residents in accessing their properties, but access to the houses is always possible.

In order to inform residents about the current state of affairs, an information event for residents is planned on September 23, 2025 at 6 p.m. at the Campus Cordis community school, Stauffenbergallee 8. Detailed information will be provided about the planning status and the start of construction. However, the live stream of the event is accessible to everyone without registration. Residents have until the day of the event to register to attend the event. However, detailed information about the construction process will only be available shortly before construction begins, according to the city.

Citizen participation and mobility plan

The city of Dresden has also addressed the issue of citizen participation. An online survey on the Mobility Plan 2035+ enables citizens to give their opinions on 14 key goals for mobility and transport development. This information is stored anonymously so that no personal data is collected. The project aims to make Dresden's transport fit for the future and to develop a good feeling for the needs of the population, as on the side of the Saxon participation portal is explained.

With these measures, the city shows that it has a good knack for improving the transport infrastructure while at the same time involving residents in the process. Even though it will take a few years until the renovation of Königsbrücker Straße is completely completed, the signs are clearly pointing to the future. Let's stay tuned to see how the plans develop!
