New Dresden-South police station: competition for sustainable construction started!
The Free State of Saxony is pushing ahead with the redesign of the Dresden-South police station. An interdisciplinary realization competition, organized by the state-owned company Saxon Real Estate and Construction Management (SIB), Dresden I branch, comes in very handy. The goal: to create a modern, sustainable office and administration building in low-tech construction that meets the needs of the police and the population. An exciting challenge that is being tackled not only by architects, but also by experts in the fields of technical building equipment, building physics and landscape architecture, as medienservice.sachsen.de reports.
Prohlis, a district of Dresden, was chosen as the location. A total usable area of around 1,859 m² is planned, which will be used around the clock by the various departments of the police station, including the criminal investigation department and the Saxon security guard. The competition attracted 13 different architectural firms to submit their designs after initially being selected from more than 15 working groups. The jury, which met on June 27, 2025, produced some remarkable results.
The winners of the competition
The design by Riehle Koeth GmbH + Co. KG from Reutlingen secured first prize. The jury praised the clarity of the building complex and the functional arrangement of the various areas, which carefully takes into account the efficiency of the work. Bez + Kock Architekten Generalplaner GmbH took second place, while CODE UNIQUE Architekten GmbH took third place. The team from Bär, Stadelmann, Stöcker Architekten was also recognized. The jury was made up of independent architects and experts from the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior and Finance.
The construction of the new police station is being implemented as a pilot project using low-tech construction methods, with particular attention being paid to sustainable and resource-saving planning. The targeted BNB certification in silver underlines this approach. The estimated gross costs for the construction project are approximately 14.055 million euros, with construction work expected to begin in August 2025. The handover to the users is planned for 2030, followed by the completion of the outdoor facilities after the demolition of the existing buildings, as noted on vergleiche-aktuell.de.
Public exhibition of the results
The results of the competition will be presented in a public exhibition at the Saxon State Ministry of Finance from July 1st to 25th, 2025. During this time, those interested can get an impression of the innovative ideas and approaches that will contribute to the future design of the police station.
Strategic contract awarding will also play a role as part of the planning to ensure that the environmental impact of the construction project is kept as low as possible. The necessary open spaces and traffic areas are also essential for the new location.
