Investigations against the CDU, SPD and AfD: disloyalty in the state parliament uncovered!

The political landscape in Saxony-Anhalt is currently the focus of intensive investigations. On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the police and the State Criminal Police Office carried out searches in the offices of the state parliamentary groups of the CDU, SPD and AfD. The reason for these measures? A serious suspicion of breach of trust in connection with improper allowances paid in 2021 and 2022. MDR reports the fact that the searches were ordered on the basis of a complaint from the Taxpayers' Association.

In detail, the focus is on functional allowances - an issue that has already been restricted by a parliamentary reform in 2020. This reform stipulates that such allowances may only be paid to MPs with specific parliamentary functions. Interestingly, the CDU parliamentary group reported payment amounts totaling 113,250 euros for “special functions” in 2021, while the AfD documented 25,600 euros and the SPD documented 7,500 euros. However, according to investigators, there are irregularities in these payments, particularly targeting payments to deputies. fr.de highlights that the CDU is said to have paid out an impressive 66,000 euros in 2021 and 47,250 euros in 2022 in allowances.

What got things rolling?

The investigation is not the first of its kind. In 2023, the first investigation was closed due to a complaint from the Taxpayers' Association. But the public prosecutor's office in Naumburg has now called for the matter to be examined again. Katja Pähle, the chairwoman of the SPD parliamentary group, emphasizes that her party no longer pays flat-rate functional allowances and instead provides a monthly expense allowance. The CDU has not yet commented on the allegations, while the AfD vehemently rejects the allegations and emphasizes that no search has taken place. However, this is refuted by the public prosecutor's office, which confirmed that a judicial search had been carried out at the AfD.

A deep-rooted problem

Corruption is one of the dark sides of politics and is an unsolved problem in democracies as well as in authoritarian regimes. The term “corruption” is often associated with the abuse of public power for private gain. According to one Article from the Federal Agency for Civic Education Political corruption is one of the most frequently discussed forms and is further promoted by lobbying influences and unclear financing channels of parties.

The investigations in Saxony-Anhalt have shed new light on the tension between politics and corruption. A topic that is becoming increasingly explosive not only regionally but nationwide. Given the complexity of the phenomenon, it is clear that it is not just about the individual factions, but about citizens' trust in the political system itself. The incident could provide further impetus for discussions about necessary reforms to strengthen transparency and integrity in political work. It remains to be seen what further developments will come to light in this high-profile case.
