Bärwalder See focus: Invasive ants and bathing accidents shake region!
Görlitz, Deutschland - Summer awakens in full shine and the temperatures rise for the weekend, which attracts many people to the Görlitz district. Especially the Bärwalder See , the largest lake in Saxony, is very popular. But while the tourist season is starting, there are also worrying news.
The DLRG has to fight hard on the nearby Berzdorfer See in Görlitz after there have been two bathing accidents in the past few days, one of which endured tragically. In a conversation with "Lord of the Little Krabler", an invasive ant species that appeared in the region and is increasingly worried.
The creeping threat of tapinoma magnum
The invasive ant Tapinoma Magnum spreads rapidly in Germany. Originally native to the Mediterranean, it has now also gained a foothold in cities such as Cologne and Hanover. The federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse are particularly affected. This type of ant can cause massive damage to buildings and technical infrastructure, with "supercolonies" being feared with hundreds of thousands of to millions of animals.
The tapinoma Magnum was first detected in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2009, presumably introduced from the Mediterranean by plant transport. There were already incidents in Kehl in which the ants caused electricity and internet failures, and a playground had to be closed because the ants had undermined the ground.
strategies for combating and the role of society
The fight against this ant species is difficult, however, because it can hardly be distinguished from domestic ants. The authorities work closely together to develop strategies for containment. There is currently no well -known means of combating tapinoma magnum. As part of a research project in Baden-Württemberg, however, you are looking for possible countermeasures to contain the spread.
It is part of a major problem: in Germany almost 2000 invasive species are now native, as a new study has shown. The list includes 1,962 types , with around 80% of the species living on land. The ecological or economic effects are only documented in less than 5%.
experts continue to warn of the consequences of the introductions of non-local species, which are favored by global trade and increasing mobility of humans. Online trading in particular increases the risk of invasive species. Many of these species, such as the fallow deer or the raccoon, were able to establish themselves, but their ecological damage is often not sufficiently documented.
tourism and economic challenges
in the municipality of Boxberg, where the Bärwalder See forms a central point, tourism is an important pillar for economic development. The decline in industrial workplaces from the coal phase -out can only be compensated for to a limited extent by tourism. There are uncertain investments that should be initiated by the LMBV, the mining renovator, such as a disposal column for sports boats in the harbor and the construction of a mole in Boxberg.
New investments in the Bärwalder See are required and private providers have already given prospect. The expectations of tourist development are high, but dealing with the challenges of invasive species remains a central topic for the region.
