European Marathon Görlitz: Record participants and new routes await!

A big sporting festival took place last weekend in Görlitz and Zgorzelec: The 20th European Marathon attracted a record number of 2,800 runners from near and far. The routes led across the border and offered the participants not only sporting challenges, but also an insight into the picturesque landscape of the region. The event was accompanied by a consistently positive atmosphere, as the impressions of the participants and spectators impressively demonstrate. Sächsische.de reports that Görlitz's district administrator also became active and acted as a helper for a visually impaired runner.

The organization of the event, which took place under the umbrella of the European Marathon Görlitz – Zgorzelec e.V. with the support of the Zgorzelec city administration, demonstrated great skill and care. The routes, which were officially measured, took participants through an undulating profile suitable for both marathon and half marathon runners. There were also relays and various runs that involved the whole family. Registrations were possible both online and on site, which made participation easy.

A look at the competitions

The 2025 European Marathon included a variety of competitions including:

  • Marathon
  • Halbmarathon
  • Staffelwettbewerbe (2 x 10,5 km und 4 x 10,5 km)
  • 10-km-Lauf
  • 5,6-km-Kurs
  • 1,5-km-Kinder- und Jugendlauf (Start um 14.00 Uhr)
  • 400-Meter-Bambinilauf (Start um 14.30 Uhr)

Interestingly, there was also prize money for the overall winners in the marathon, who were awarded with vouchers worth 3,000 zloty, while in the half marathon there was prize money of up to 300 euros. The participants enjoyed a commemorative medal at the finish and were able to collect their participation certificate just 25 minutes after crossing the finish line. All of this provided a motivating incentive to participate, including for the younger generations.

News from Görlitz

It wasn't just the marathon that caused excitement in Görlitz. Entrepreneur Klaus Dussa is investing in the region by reviving a former village shop in Friedersdorf. With fresh ideas, the store should not only stimulate the local economy, but also become a popular meeting place for wedding parties.

In addition, the next mayoral election in Görlitz is scheduled for next year. Incumbent Octavian Ursu (CDU) will announce after the summer break whether he would like to run again. The city council will then set an election date.

The positive development of the region is also underlined by the planned railway test center in the Görlitz district. A modern center for rail vehicles is to be built there, but everything depends on the requirements of an investor that has yet to be found. my.raceresult.com also offers comprehensive information about the next European marathon, which has already been announced for June 9, 2024, with an exciting “Noodle Party” as a preliminary event.

The picture of Görlitz is rounded off by the talented Abed Jiji. The 17-year-old student at the Görlitz music school plans to study music. He fled with his family from Aleppo to Germany in 2014 and is now taking part in the national competition “Jugend musiziert” – a real source of hope for the future.

In summary, Görlitz is a dynamic and growing city that has a lot to offer both in terms of sport and culture. The European Marathon is just one part of a colorful event that keeps the region alive. The organizers and participants are already looking forward to the next edition!
