Healthy red pandas in Görlitz: joy after the first health check!

There is good news at Görlitz Zoo: The four-week-old red pandas, which were born a month ago, have successfully completed their first health check. On July 1, 2025, this examination not only determined the gender of the two cute animals - they are a brother-sister pair - but also checked their health. The two young animals weigh 540 grams and 537 grams and, according to zoo curator Catrin Hammer, are “completely healthy, cheerful and extremely happy.”

Despite the summer heat, the health check was stress-free. Thanks to cool rooms and ice packs, the little pandas were able to stay relaxed. During the examination they were checked for parasites, dewormed and chipped. Red pandas are known for their pleasant nature, but their species is also critically endangered, making it even more important to protect and conserve them. When asked where these small animals come from, it should be said that they are originally native to the Himalayan region and neighboring areas and their diet consists mainly of leaves and fruits tagesschau.de.

Görlitz Zoo focuses on education and species protection

The red pandas are not only very popular in the zoo, their population is also a serious issue. Their protection is of great importance as they are highly endangered in nature. In order to raise awareness of this fascinating species, the Görlitz Zoo is involved in educational work. The team has a good knack for ensuring that the little ones grow up healthy and take visitors' hearts by storm.

What many people don't know: The Chinese name of the red pandas, "Hun-ho", means "fire fox" and refers to their striking, reddish fur color. With a body measuring up to 70 cm and a tail that can be up to half a meter long, these animals have an impressive appearance. According to reports, they show that they have a particularly loving nature not only in their happy play, but also through their interactions in the group dynamics in the zoo stern.de.
