Görlitz celebrates: International Straßentheaterfestival starts via Thea!

in Görlitz is a special event in front of the door that brings the rousing world of the street theater back to the streets. The 29th International Straßentheaterfestival via Thea takes place from June 26th to 28th, 2025 and promises to become a colorful spectacle for young and old. alle-lausitz.de reports that the festival will be officially opened with a cultural picnic in the city park at 5:00 p.m. Visitors are cordially invited to bring their blankets and picnic baskets with them and to be infected by the atmosphere.

Over 20 artistic ensembles from Europe, Asia and South America will revitalize the city with theater, music, dance and performance outdoors during these three days. A diverse program is offered that not only includes professional ideas, but also interactive formats. Some highlights are the Mongolian Bugan Band, which combines traditional instruments with modern beats, as well as the performance group Kalumalu, which will offer an interactive sewing workshop entitled "Margaretes Schneiderei".

a festival for all senses

The festival attracts international contributions from countries such as Poland, France, Finland, Israel, Italy, Spain and Mongolia. Particularly noteworthy is the cooperation with the Gerhart Hauptmann Theater, which contributes several contributions, including an impressive monologue according to Jacob Böhme and the dance piece "Value" by the choreographer Massimo Gerardi. The latter addresses the value of dance and art in a social context and is impressively accompanied by percussionist Uwe Tontsch. After the premiere on June 26th, further performances for June 27 and 28 are planned on Marienplatz.

The festival remains accessible to everyone. Admission is free, but there is the possibility to acquire a printed program for 5 euros to support the festival. The proceeds flow into the organization and implementation of the events. In addition, the Görlitz transport companies have announced that lines 1, b and n on the festival evenings have been extended by one hour to enable the visitor: inside a comfortable journey.

A look over the borders

Not only Görlitz is looking forward to the return of the street artists. Events similar to the International Straßentheater Festival in Ludwigshafen, which will take place in July 2024, show how important and popular this form of art is in Germany. There, too, over 70 artists and 16 groups from different countries are expected to revitalize the city center with dance, juggling, music and theater. Here the leitmotif of the connection and change is emphasized by various elements of art. A good reason to celebrate the diversity of the street theater in other cities! ludwigshafen.de
