Görlitz imposes alcohol ban: Focus on safety at Marienplatz!

In Görlitz, a new ban on alcohol consumption is a comprehensive step towards more order and security in the cityscape. From next Monday, alcoholic beverages will no longer be allowed to be consumed between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. in two central squares, Marienplatz and “An der Frauenkirche”. The city council made this decision to put a stop to the common groups that gather to drink. There have been repeated calls from the emergency services and police, particularly in the evenings, which underlines the need for this regulation.

Mayor Octavian Ursu emphasizes that there are serious problems in the affected areas and that the ban is now based on solid data. It is important to improve the situation sustainably. The ban is initially set for two years, and the governments have also agreed on increased control by the public order office, the police and the security guard. Signs will communicate the new regulations in the restricted zones, with the aim of informing residents about both the problem and the new measures.  Sächsische.de reports that this initiative for the two squares did not go without resistance, as the Left Party and the Motor Görlitz/Alliance Greens/SPD faction expressed concerns that the problem could be relocated to other districts.

Experiences from Weißwasser: A successful model?

The city of Weißwasser has had similar experiences since May 2023. An alcohol ban zone has been introduced on the boulevard, which is controlled from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The city administration of Weißwasser was also confronted with problems, especially around the New Glass Maker's Fountain, where drunken groups also often dominated the scene. The measure has now even been extended until April 30, 2027 to promote law and order. The police chief inspector of Weißwasser sees this ban as an important instrument for ensuring security in the city. Here, too, there were some fine proceedings that took place in connection with alcohol consumption.

Another aspect is the possibility of applying for exceptions to the regulations, for example for festivals or events. This flexibility could help both in Görlitz and in Weißwasser to continue to offer local traditional events the necessary framework without losing sight of safety concerns. The city administration is thus ensuring that the ban is not seen as repression, but rather as a targeted measure to improve the cityscape.

The discussion about the new regulations shows that the issue of alcohol consumption in public spaces is highly complex. The potential for distraction and resistance is great, but cities appear to be taking the right approach to providing a more livable environment for their citizens. The coming months will show whether the new measures can actually bring about the desired results. So it remains to be seen how the situation will develop on the pitches in Görlitz and whether the positive experiences from Weißwasser will also apply in Görlitz. Information on this can also be found on the official Weißwasser website, which provides detailed information about the regulations, Weisswasser.de.
