Heat wave in Weißwasser: Fire brigade saves trees with 4800 liters of water!
The heat wave in Weißwasser reached its peak on Wednesday. It was already scorching hot in the city before midday on Monday and the ground was partly dry. In order to support the trees in the area, the fire department has pooled its strengths and is supporting the municipal building yard with all kinds of irrigation campaigns. Firefighter Dennis Hemmo and his colleague have been on duty at the station forecourt since 9 a.m. and have several thousand liters of water with them. Just a few hours later, the second tank had to be sprayed empty after over a dozen trees were each supplied with up to 100 liters of water.
But it's not just the trees that are the fire department's focus. Borders and other plantings are also irrigated to maintain greenery in the city. “We have planned a few more missions in the coming days, especially with the young plantings,” reports Hemmo. The extreme heat is taking its toll, but so far there have been no forest fires this hot season - a relief for the firefighters.
Call for caution during heat waves
Prevention measures also include that barbecuing in nature should only take place in designated areas, and cigarette butts should definitely not be disposed of in the forest, even if they are no longer burning. “We must all take responsibility for our environment and ensure that no dangerous situations arise,” said Hachemer.
Outdoor safety
When planning outdoor activities, it is particularly important to keep an eye on approaching thunderstorms. Warning apps can be of good use here. In the event of a storm, a sturdy building is the safest place. Anyone who is outdoors and is surprised by a thunderstorm should crouch in a depression and avoid tall objects such as trees or metal structures. When driving on the road, it is advisable to wait in a tree-free parking lot during storms and hail.
And don't forget: emergencies such as accidents or fires should be reported immediately to the emergency number 112. After a thunderstorm, damage that does not represent an acute danger should only be reported afterwards.
In times like these it becomes clear once again how important it is to deal responsibly with nature and the challenges it offers us. Heat waves and possible storms not only bring dangers, but also require us all to be vigilant and show solidarity.
