Sustainable swimwear: &Other Stories relies on algae fibers!

In recent years, the fashion industry has increasingly relied on sustainable materials and innovative production methods. A recent example is & Other Stories' new beachwear collection, released on June 27, 2025. This collection uses Kelsun, an eco-friendly material made from algae fibers developed by Keel Labs, a company committed to material innovation. Kelsun® is made entirely without plastics and combines the seaweed fiber with organic cotton to ensure both softness and durability. This unique blend avoids the harmful additives often found in agricultural production and promotes responsible use of natural resources.

Designer Frida Billegren was inspired by the organic shapes and beauty of sea life when developing this new collection. Her creations include two attractive crochet pieces in a neutral cream tone. What is particularly noteworthy is that the dyeing process is not necessary here - the natural color of the algae fiber is used, which also makes the manufacturing process more environmentally friendly. Cecilia McNeil, Head of Sustainability, highlights the successful combination of fashion and innovation and illustrates how important it is to break new ground in the industry.

A platform for materials innovation

Keel Labs was launched in 2017 under the name AlgiKnit by Tessa Callaghan and Aleks Gosiewski. The company is dedicated to developing climate-friendly material solutions based on ocean-based raw materials. In 2022 it was renamed Keel Labs to further sharpen its focus on the use of innovative materials. The team is working to reduce dependence on farmland by harnessing ocean resources while combating textile waste in the fashion industry.

In recent years, the fashion industry has increasingly recognized the importance of environmentally friendly materials. As Vogue reports, brands such as Stella McCartney and Zara have already introduced products made from sustainable alternatives such as Mylo – a leather substitute made from mushroom roots. These companies are just a few of the many working on developing climate-friendly materials. According to Nina Marenzi, founder of Future Fabrics Expo, the importance of these materials will only increase in the future.

The introduction of & Other Stories' seaweed fiber beachwear collection is not only a step in the right direction, but also shows that sustainability and fashionable design can go hand in hand. It remains exciting to see how such innovative approaches influence the future development of the fashion industry and how consumers react to them.
