Discover the biodiversity: Bioblitz in the botanical garden!

From June 14th to 22nd, 2025, the "Week of Botanical Gardens 2025" takes place, which is launched on the occasion of a special event, the organic blitz. During this week, 35 botanical gardens in German -speaking countries invite you to explore the biological diversity in its systems. This Citizen Science project encourages all nature enthusiasts to explore the gardens and document their observations. This is reported by the Friedrich-alexander-universität Erlangen-nürnberg and the Association of botanical gardens .

Participation in the BioBioblitz is via the free app inherited, which is available both in the Google Play Store and in the Apple App Store. The users only have to register to be able to use the app. You can use the Innaturalist platform to photograph animals, mushrooms, lichens, mosses and plants and upload their observations. Every observation counts!

competitions and awards

In addition to the research activities, various competitions are proclaimed. The most active observers can be awarded here: inside, the best photos and the most diverse observations per garden. A jury that consists of representatives of the associations involved will determine the winners. Dr. Mark Benecke, a renowned criminal biologist, takes over the patronage of the event and brings both scientific expertise and public commitment.

The Bioblitz event is not only an opportunity to explore biodiversity, but also a way to take part in tours, workshops, lectures and determination courses. The Botanical gardens offer both educational offers as well as the opportunity to deepen their own skills in the field of nature observation.

how to participate

To actively participate in the bioblitz, visitors should activate the location services on your smartphone inside when you enter a botanical garden. This ensures that your observations can be correctly assigned to the respective garden. After uploading the data, the location releases can be deactivated at any time to protect privacy.

The event not only promotes understanding of the biological diversity in the gardens, but also combines people with similar interests. Visit the respective gardens and express your love for nature. All details and instructions for participation are available on the websites mentioned above. Every contribution to the documentation of diversity is important and the public commitment is crucial for the success of this project.
