East Saxony on rails: merger of transport associations brings advantages!

An exciting turn is underway in East Saxony's transport system! Entirely in the spirit of networking, the Association meeting of the Upper Lusatia-Lower Silesia Transport Association (ZVON) decided to join the Upper Elbe Transport Association (VVO). This project is aimed at a more comprehensive network of local transport and is intended to appeal to both commuters and day-trippers.

The background is complex: more and more Dresden residents are moving to the surrounding area, while employees often commute to Dresden. These developments require closer integration not only in the transport sector, but also in the areas of business, education and leisure. The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and new educational locations in Hoyerswerda and Bautzen have already established strong links with Dresden universities.

Benefits for passengers

The merger of ZVON and VVO brings with it several advantages. The region's approximately 1.5 million citizens will be able to benefit from the elimination of special tariff regulations in the future, which will significantly simplify local public transport. A new common tariff and a better coordinated transport offer are also being planned in the future. This decision shows: Mobility is a central component of the quality of life and the business location, as is the Saxon state government emphasized.

The Free State of Saxony has a well-developed route and line network, which is organized through cooperation in five special-purpose associations within defined local transport areas. The focus is on both infrastructure and innovative technologies. Since 2019, there have been nationwide bus offers such as PlusBus and TaktBus, which primarily improve mobility in rural areas.

A look into the future

The next steps have already been initiated, as further resolutions will be made in the VVO committees by the end of the year. Nothing will change for passengers for the time being, but plans for the new offers and tariffs are already underway. The new joint association meeting will consist of representatives from cities such as Dresden, Görlitz, Bautzen, Meißen and the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains.

The current development shows once again how important networking is in local public transport. After all, mobility is not just a question of location, but crucial to the quality of life in the region. East Saxony is getting ready for sustainable mobility – this will further weld the region together.
