Red panda twin babies conquer Görlitz – now in the live stream!
There is reason to be happy in the Görlitz Zoo: The popular red pandas have had offspring - in a double pack! This sweet addition, which was born a few weeks ago, brings a breath of fresh air to the zoo. The two little puppies each weigh around 800 grams and are now six weeks old. As the zoo reports, this is the fourth litter from mother panda Zayah. The remarkable mother came to Upper Lusatia from Alphen aan den Rijn in 2021 and has so far mastered her motherly duties with flying colors. The panda twin pups are also part of the European Endangered Species Program (EEP), in which the zoo has been participating since 1997. So far, a total of 25 red panda puppies have been born in the Görlitz Zoo.
Red pandas are endangered species and are currently critically endangered. The main causes are loss of habitat, poaching, illegal trade and diseases such as distemper, which can be transmitted by domestic dogs. The Görlitz-Zgorzelec Zoo is actively involved in saving these charming animals with its breeding program. Visitors are welcome to watch the pandas' development via a live stream on the zoo's website, or to follow the latest insights directly at the enclosure, where a screen has been set up to watch the little ones play.
A special home
What luck for the pandas! Not only visitors to the zoo, but also the team around curator Catrin Hammer can be happy about their cute googly eyes. She explained that an adult common toad had also settled in the panda's den. This animal symbiosis is extremely useful: the toad manages to keep the enclosure free of annoying insects such as mosquitoes and flies and thus does its part to enable the pandas to live a quiet life. A true dream team!
The WWF highlights that red pandas are not only adorable, but also culturally important. Frederic Cuvier described them as the “most beautiful mammal on earth”. Due to their way of life, they are quite difficult to spot in nature, which also contributes to the danger. It is therefore all the more important to promote projects to preserve their population, such as the efforts in the Görlitz Zoo. Sponsorships for the little pandas can be supported for a year via a provided email address, which offers a great opportunity to actively engage in nature conservation.
In summary, it can be said that the birth of the panda twins in the Görlitz Zoo is not only a success for breeding, but also an important sign for the protection of an endangered species. Visitors can already look forward to new experiences and insights into the life of the red pandas while the little ones grow up in their nursery.
