Serious traffic accident: 69-year-old crashes into a home in Kottmarsdorf

On Wednesday, July 2, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred in Kottmarsdorf that kept the emergency services on tenterhooks. A 69-year-old man was driving his Golf on Ebersbacher Strasse when, for reasons that are still unclear, he left the road and crashed into a residential building. The vehicle finally came to a stop in the living room of a bungalow. Fortunately, no one was in the house at the time of the collision, so anything worse was avoided. However, the senior suffered serious injuries and had to be freed from the wreckage. He was immediately flown to a clinic to be treated there, as Sächsische.de reports.

The accident in Kottmarsdorf is just one of many incidents that have happened on the region's roads. On June 30, 2025, a 29-year-old Pole was stopped in Krauschwitz driving a stolen Mazda CX-5. The car, which had previously been stolen in Berlin and was worth around 30,000 euros, was not only reported stolen, but the driver also did not have a valid driving license. The suspect has been temporarily arrested and the investigation is ongoing, as Sachsen.de notes.

Traffic accidents and safety

Traffic accidents are a serious issue in Germany. According to Statista, there were around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in 2023. Despite a downward trend in traffic fatalities since the 2010s, the numbers remain at a high level. The goal of “Vision Zero” is to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2050. The most common causes of accidents with personal injuries are insufficient distance, improper speed and drunk driving. The number of alcohol-related accidents was also significant in 2023 at around 15,700, with 193 people losing their lives (Statista).

Police recently took part in checks in the region to ensure road safety remains maintained. In Kamenz, 14 people were checked and 10 violations were found for alcohol consumption and garbage dumping. This shows that a watchful eye is required not only when driving but also when in public spaces.

The challenges in traffic

In addition to the incidents already mentioned, there were also numerous other accidents and crimes in the past week. There was a rear-end collision on the A4 motorway in which a 27-year-old drove a Honda into a BMW without causing any injuries. However, the highway was completely closed, which resulted in a backlog and triggered new accidents. This once again sensitizes the population to the fact that extreme caution is always required, especially on busy roads (Sachsen.de).

The high number of traffic accidents and the increase in alcohol-related accidents make it clear that a high level of attention is also required in our region. The following applies to all road users: safety comes first, whether on the road or when parking. It is up to all of us to follow the traffic rules and thus contribute to safety on the roads.
