Tragic traffic accident in Görlitz: 71-year-old died!

In Görlitz on Tuesday, two serious traffic accidents caused a stir and sadness. The first incident occurred around 12:35 p.m. on Girbigsdorfer Straße. A 71-year-old man lost control of his Peugeot, which rolled backwards from the right side of the road onto the oncoming lane and collided with a parked Ford. Despite immediate resuscitation measures at the scene of the accident, the man later died in hospital. The traffic accident service has taken over the investigation in order to find out more about the exact circumstances of the tragic accident.

Less than two hours earlier, another accident occurred at the Klinikum intersection. A 63-year-old woman was waiting here in her Fiat when a 19-year-old motorcyclist drove into her. Wet road presumably led to this accident, in which the young woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Unfortunately, such eventful days are not the exception in the region, as current statistics show.

Traffic accidents in numbers

In 2024, a total of 13,410 traffic accidents were recorded in the Görlitz police department, which includes the Bautzen and Görlitz districts. This is a decrease of 3.0 percent compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, tragic incidents continue to occur: with 29 traffic fatalities, there were seven fewer deaths in 2024 than in 2023, which means a decrease of 19.4%. However, the number of seriously injured people rose to 510, representing an increase of 4.1%.

A focus of the accidents is the age group of seniors aged 65 and over, who were involved in 3,974 cases - an increase of 6.8%. Young road users between the ages of 18 and 24 were also involved in 1,943 accidents. Right-of-way violations remain the main cause, followed by improper or excessive speed. This shows how important it is to ensure safety on our roads and raise awareness of road safety.

Future of road safety

The results from traffic accident statistics are not only of interest to the public. They also serve as a basis for measures in legislation, traffic education as well as for road construction and vehicle technology. As the statistics shows, a differentiated view of the causes of accidents is essential in order to achieve targeted improvements in road traffic. The discussion about road safety is more relevant than ever and should not only be held after serious accidents.

The people of Görlitz are called upon to pay more attention to their fellow human beings and the road conditions in order to increase safety for all road users.
