Wild chase in Görlitz: Drug driver rams police with stolen car!
On Saturday night, a tumultuous spectacle broke out in Görlitz that kept the police on their toes. A 58-year-old driver was caught during a traffic stop because he simply forgot to signal when turning. However, instead of reducing control of his vehicle, he stepped on the gas and attempted to flee. This reports that the escape in a stolen car - which had previously been taken in Hesse - ended when the driver crashed into a shed.
But that wasn't enough: the fleeing driver backed up and rammed a police vehicle. During the subsequent arrest, it turned out that the man was driving under the influence of amphetamines and without a driver's license. This meant he had to answer for several rule violations at once, and on top of all of this there was also an open arrest warrant issued against the driver. After his arrest, he was taken to a correctional facility.
A look at the chase
Similar chases are becoming more frequent in the region. An incident in Unna on Tuesday, August 26, 2025 shows the extent of this problem. A 30-year-old German man of no fixed address rammed several patrol cars and an uninvolved vehicle while driving at excessive speed on the B1. As it later turned out, the license plates attached to the vehicle had previously been stolen. Apparently both men were under the influence of drugs, which further escalated the situation.
The traffic acrobat from Unna was finally stopped at the intersection of Ahornstrasse and Eichenstrasse. It was a stroke of luck that two police officers were slightly injured but remained fit for duty. The driver was arrested, but his passenger was released. In the trunk of the vehicle, officers found several cans of gasoline, which may also have been stolen. The damage to the vehicles involved, including the police cars, was significant, once again illustrating the risks of such chases.
Drugs and their dangers
The background to the drug problem should not be underestimated. According to the Epidemiological Addiction Survey 2018, there are increasing numbers of addictions among adults between the ages of 18 and 64. The situation is particularly alarming with stimulants such as amphetamines and cocaine, while the effects of drugs that have an increased potential for abuse and addiction are also not uninteresting. In view of the two incidents in Görlitz and Unna, it becomes clear how urgently the handling of drugs in road traffic should be discussed.
The developments in Görlitz and Unna are just two of many examples that pose major challenges for the police and society. How many more incidents like this have to happen before there is a noticeable turnaround? Those responsible have a duty to address these issues more intensively.
